So, are you proposing / sanctioning lazy-boy recliners for all students, free roam of the halls (during class) and outbursts whenever they want to? In many cases, courses are ELECTIVES - meaning they choose to take the classes. The basic principles of 'Reading 'writin and 'rithmatic" are still required learning - it's the only way to prepare kids for the future in the real world.
Students are there to LEARN prescribed teaching material, using conventional methods. Bullied? No. Taught, yes.
I really can't believe you posted such ignorant comments
Well, first I propose VOLUNTARY participation. Second, K - 8th grade, there are VERY FEW ELECTIVES. Third, learning the 3 R's does not require 7 hours a day(not including homework time) in ten 40 minute intervals, 5 days a week, 9 months out of the year for 13 years.
I know when I was in school; we were mandated to take a foreign language, an instrument, home economic, and "technology". All of which I had no interest in. And even if I had been interest, a 40 minute class every other day between gym class and lunch wasn’t a conducive to learning. Needless to say, I can't sew a patch on a sweater (home eco,.) I can't speak Spanish, and I can't play an instrument.(I tried to learn guitar after I graduated - not my bag.)
People never seem comfortable questioning the effect the system has on children. We just clamor for more state programs like anti bullying classes, or even better yet, having psycho therapist perform chemical lobotomy with Ritalin to help those hyper children conform.
One in ten Americans are on anti depressants - up 400% in 20 years. 80% of all pain meds prescribed in the world is prescribed to Americans. What is going on in America? Why are we so afraid to question the system that shapes the minds of our youth?

I guess it goes to show that school works.
Its obvious to me that you haven't seen the inside of a school , at least as a student or parent, in a VERY long time. The class choices today are LEAPS and BOUNDS different of what you are describing. Even so, there is always room for improvement. Why do we need kids on Ritalin? Maybe we should look at the crap the food industry has produced in the last 20 years , food loaded with preservatives so mommy can make supper in 3 minutes because she just got home from her full time job. These preservatives have NEVER been tested in a long term study to find out if they causes issues with developing brains.
If you don't think bullying exists, talk to my 18 year old. When a bullied person fights back, he gets suspended along with the bully... The anti-bully classes are fine, but we have to draw a line in the sand where bullies get expelled. Public education should educate everyone that can follow guidelines, if you can't, your expulsion improves the climate for students that want to learn. And what's the point of keeping a person in school that either doesn't want to be there, or through their behavior, gets nothing out of it anyway?

It still has me shaking my head that Cicero can make such a stupid paragraph of words. Maybe he was high on THC or medical marijuana at the time. Who knows.
Of course, THC, that's it...Another authoritarian 'conservative' that reveres the compulsory public school system. As long as the system is forcing the 'conservative' state curriculum onto the children, then it is a great system. MT's solution to bullying is that parents need to discipline their child better before giving them to the state for 7 hours a day.

PLEASE - DO NOT PROCREATE ... it might be considered Child Abuse.
That video is disgusting, I would of snapped and started knocking their teeth down their throats, the jail time would be worth it >

You are not allowed to stand up to bullies. You must identify them and report them to the authorities so they canbe put through an anti bullying re-education class. The fact you admit you may snap in the face of bullying may actually require you attend anger management therapy. Any response of individual self reliance and acting independently needs to be corrected. You must supress the natural instincts to stand up to the bully and cower until you can contact the authorities to handle it for you.
OMG I just watched the whole video , saw a little of it on the news yesterday but didn't realize how long this lasted.
Those bastards not only harrassed her but they had NO right touching her.
I still cannot understand why she didn't yell to the bus driver to STOP the bus ! These monsters get away with that on the bus just imagine when they are not in a supervised situation.
I too would have lost it, especially when one of them brought up suicide, as her son had committed suicide
As a couple of the kids are seen on the video and others I'm sure the school knows who they are, I wonder what will be done about this? They should never be allowed on a bus again.
don;t agree with public.....this woman did not stand up for herself....bus dri ver at fault for not reporting it....parents at fault .....children at fault...
what has a vacation have to do with anything.....sue them all with the money......
....feel that this incident is not being addressed properly......yes the woman is a victim....but.....a VACATION???....isn;t that skirting the issue entirely??/
law and order justice.....is the answer....not compensation....
If you click on the video and read the replies made WOW. Some way over the top but people are pisse*. Someone actually put the phone numbers up of a couple of the kids. Also the email of the principal for people to make comments to. I just did. His email box has to be overflowing
At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Greece Police Capt. Steve Chatterton said that bus monitor Karen Klein does not want to press criminal charges against the teens who verbally abused her Monday on a school bus.
The incident was caught on video and posted online. It went viral Wednesday.
Klein, who has worked for the district for 23 years, told police that she’s happy to let the school district handle the students’ punishments.
Chatterton said all four students involved, 13-year-old seventh-graders, have spoken with police regarding the incident. All four teens have taken responsibility for their actions, he said.
District officials said the teens will face disciplinary action. It was not immediately clear what that action would be.
As her story spread on social media and in media reports around the globe, Klein received an outpouring of support. A website was set up to raise funds to give her a vacation. As of midday Thursday, it had raised more than $250,000.

This is true, and the kids know that. You can't yell at them for fear of bruising their precious little egos, and you sure as hell can't hit them unless prison is part of your retirement plan.
Still, this situation begs many questions. Why is she a monitor? She sure as hell can't do the job. What happens when the kids taunt each other? Does she stare out the window and cry? What is her function? Professional passenger?
I'm sure she's a nice person and all, but putting her in that position, or she putting herself in that position, is like hiring on Mahatma Gandhi as a bouncer for your biker bar.

I doubt any jury would convict her if she smacked the smirk off one of those punks faces after watching that video.

Her job is to assist in case of an emergency, help the kids off the bus etc. Now if there is a altercation on the bus they tell the driver to pull over and call the police, so pretty much her hands were tied.
