SCHENECTADY Fires strike 2 more abandoned buildings State Street blaze displaces family in house next-door BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Two fires broke out in abandoned buildings in the city within minutes of each other Monday afternoon, becoming the latest in a string of fi res within the past month that authorities are investigating as suspicious. Of the two, the fire at 942 State St. was the worst, requiring the entire city Fire Department to contain it, but not before it gutted the abandoned twostory, wood-frame house and displaced a family in the house next door. The second fire at 738 Albany St., a former ski shop, was extinguished quickly by fire companies from outside of the city under a mutual aid agreement. Schenectady Fire Chief Michael Della Rocco said fire investigators were combing through the two structures to determine how the fi res started. Neither building had electrical power and the Albany Street structure was boarded up. Several suspicious fi res have already occurred within the 738 Albany St. building, he said. Neighbors said people were frequently going in and out of 942 State St., using it as a drug haven. Della Rocco was reluctant to categorize the fires. “I could say safely that the Fire Department this year has experienced accidental and intentionally set fires at twice the rate of previous years,” he said. He said causes of some of the fi res that occurred since Jan. 1 remain undetermined and that investigations into others are ongoing. Mayor Gary McCarthy, who visited the State Street fire scene Monday night, referred questions about the string of fires to Della Rocco. With Monday night’s fi res, the city has had a total of fi ve fires since May 20, four of them in abandoned buildings, that are considered suspicious. The Fire Department received the call for 942 State St. at 4:41 p.m. and the call for 738 Albany St. at 5:05 p.m. “When the first crews arrived, they found heavy fl ames and smoke coming from the building. It is a big building,” Della Rocco said. He said smoke and fl ames from 942 State were so intense city fire personnel could see them at Station 2 blocks away at 1515 State St. He said a light breeze helped the fire grow quickly in the building, which was open. No one was injured fighting the fire, although personnel required frequent hydration because of the intense heat from the fire and the day’s high temperature. The Fire Department was able to bring the State Street blaze under control within 50 minutes of arrival. Personnel also worked hard to keep the fire from jumping to the house next-door, which sits about the width of a car away. They used hoses to wet down the interior and exterior of 944 State in addition to using the house to attack the fi re next-door. The fire caused the rear portion of 942 State to collapse. McCarthy said the city will demolish the structure as it is uninhabitable. Ray Sukhan, a resident of 944 State, said he and his family were told to vacate the house because it sustained water damage. The family was allowed to enter the structure and gather as many belongings as they could carry. The residents are staying with friends and family and don’t know when they will be allowed to return. Sukhan said family members were in the backyard swimming when they noticed smoke coming from 942 State and called authorities. He said they tried to tell city officials numerous times that the house was dangerous and was being used as a drug haven. ....................................>>>>>...........................>>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00101&AppName=1

Reminds me of the buddhists in Amsterdam - buy everything and then get ready to dump them when things don't go their way
As I remember, the Buddhists were chased out of that sh*thole the xenophobic morons that live there. They bought over 40 properties, with full intentions of rehabbing them, and getting them back on the tax rolls, but each building was vandalized as soon as it was ready for occupancy, in what can only be described as hate crimes.
For example, they didn't even steal the copper, they just cut out critical joints of the heating systems so that they would be ruined. The backwards morons that live there made sure that anything they did, was obvious vandalism, and not theft. Hell, some people just BELONG in Amsterdam. Keep them all in one place.
I guess the Buddhist's efforts, just interfered with the squalor of Amsterdam, garden spot that it is.
Now they can get grant funds to build a super-insulated, zero-energy, zero-gravity, LEED Gold certified house in its place for $675 a square foot for the peasants to ruin within a year- in place of that. And give it away free to a single-mother headed, welfare living 'family.' I use the term 'family' very loosely for any of the peasants that live in the City of Schenectady.
