SCHENECTADY — A lieutenant with the Schenectady County Sheriff's Office has been demoted and suspended for hitting a correction officer who accidentally flooded a toilet at the county jail, according to people familiar with the situation who said the encounter also resulted in a sergeant being punished.
They gave this account of the sequence of events:
In late April, Lt. Jack Purdy, a watch commander on the 3:15-to-11:15 p.m. shift struck Officer James Stirzaker in the back of the head several times because Stirzaker inadvertently flooded the toilet in the booking bathroom at the jail.
After Stirzaker's stepfather, Sgt. William Varrone, found out about the incident, he allegedly sent an angry text message to several correction officers on the night shift and challenged them to a fight in the parking lot of the Veeder Avenue jail.
Varrone, who was off duty, showed up in the parking lot and had to be restrained by fellow correction officers. He later filed a complaint with the union about Purdy's abuse of Stirzaker.
Once jail supervisors learned about the allegations of workplace misconduct, they launched a probe that led to Purdy and Varrone being punished.
Purdy was demoted to sergeant, suspended without pay for 10 days and docked the same amount of accrued time, placed on employment probation for a year and ordered to undergo sensitivity training.
Varrone received a similar penalty, but was not demoted.
