First, I challenge the statement that 98% of Catholic women use birth control. Common sense will tell anyone that Catholic women who have not reached child-bearing age and those who have passed child-bearing age are not likely to be using birth control.
Second, it doesn't matter how many individual Catholics ( or of any church for that matter) follow a church teaching or not. The Constitution clearly states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." . We are reminded of Thomas Jefferson's own words in the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, written in 1779: "No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burthened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer, on account of his religious opinions or belief; but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in no way diminish, enlarge, or affect their civil capacities."
For me, the most important issue in the 2012 Election is whether our FOUNDATIONAL NATIONAL PRINCIPLES of Religious Liberty/Freedom of Expression will survive. I can not and will not support a candidate for president who not only has no respect for Religious Liberty but has plainly and clearly declared war on it.
