Went to buyback today, can tell you I really cannot see ANYONE turning in an illegal gun.  Even with BB guns the first thing they ask for is ID. Then if you tell them you are turning in an item anonymously still ask for your name and address. Then when you don't give that you have to give name anyways for gift card. Oh and guy there with camera taping.

I really hope they did get some "illegal" guns taken in but can't see that happening the way it is set up. If they really want them turned in people should just beable to walk in and turn them in no questions asked.

Even the parking lot somewhat intimidating with Sheriff's cars etc. alot of people iniside mostly deputies and M. Chaires, and did see M. Porterfield.

But can say that even turning in a legal BB gun you know NOTHING is anonyomous.

Wanted to add that actually the majority of guns are legal, it's the person who uses it illegally or gets it illegally that makes it illegal.

And "visitor" wonders why nobody reports tips "anonymously" - PERFECT example of why I don't trust them.  Videotaped?  Anonymous turn in?  What's wrong with this concept people.

Anonymity works in other cities - other towns - without fail - I just don't feel like I can trust SPD to keep tips anonymous, sorry.

I once seen a crime happen, being the concerned citizen I am I told the police what I saw. Well days later I was brought in to explain what I saw, no problem I did. Later again I was brought in and was told they thought I was lying to them about what I seen, that accusation pissed me off considering I was the one who went to the police in the first place, after I told him that he said "well we think you are lying to us". I can't go into details about what happened after that but believe me it was a nightmare which l will never forget, never again did I trust anyone in this city >

just wait - someone will come back with a reply like "send me a private message" or "contact the police action line with the details and we'll look into it.

Ya, right.

My story would make you sick if you knew the whole thing, if one good thing came out of it is I learned how corrupt the system is here. This is why I tell everyone here to know their rights and to be sure they use them, I wish I knew then what I know now.

Henry,
Be proud you did the right thing, but I know what you are talking about regarding the treatment of someone who tries to do what is right and then is treated like a criminal him or her self

I USED to be one of those people who wondered why people didn't talk, but I know why, and if visitor is in law enforcement he knows why too.

I too can't get into what occurred, but will say the lawyer said NEVER EVER talk to police or any government agency, NEVER volunteer information, NEVER listen when you are told we just have a few questions, your not in any trouble.

When you go through something like this your whole world is turned upside down.

It's sad because I was brought up to respect all law enforcement, I knew some wonderful cops growing up.  But the world has changed and even the most law abiding citizen can have their words twisted, and of course who are they going to believe.

I know some of you watch the council meetings and D. Birch shows up at alot of them, he says he was abused by police, you know the guy McCarthy said had "mental issues"

Well at one of the meetings he said he was going to present his evidence for anyone to see at the public library.

I know when he gives the date and time I will be there.  I want to see what he has gone through and I hope at least one council member shows up, I'm thinking V. Riggi hopefully.

So Henry again be proud of doing the right thing and being a good citizen, but I'm so sorry for whatever happened after : (

What color is the sky in you world?  If someone called up from a phone they didn't own and quickly gave police the name of the shooter - how would anybody find out?

Ya - like the gun buyback video?  How many cameras does SPD have on street corners, cameras on ATM's, commercial businesses, etc.  I wouldn't put it past the PD to track the cameras, or if they really wanted to, dust the keypad for prints.  You do still "investigate" right?  Keep the caller on the phone - have a car ride by perhaps?  I'd guess there's less than two dozen pay phones left working in the city ... probably less, so your point is irrelevant. Phone they don't own - uh huh, then harass the original owner till he gives it up.

Just like through your website - I'm sure you monitor IP addresses of incoming mail .. really hard to track back to the provider, then a quick visit to TimeWarner to pull the user information.

How about a video at the gun buyback program - that supposedly is anonymous, where you have to give your name anyway?  Ya - anonymous.  You can't even BEGIN to defend that abuse of trust.

I agree with the abuse of trust 100%!!! However you are giving these cops too much credit. Crime is so rampant in the city and there are many assailants still running loose! Investigate? Monitor IP's? Check cameras?  Check phone records? Sure these options are all available....but clearly they are not being used by the spd.....cause if they were....they would have a better handle on the crime. Instead they use the word  'anonymous' and turn around and ask for ID and have a camera taking pics of these folks!! Trust? I don't think so! Not to mention Henry's story!! OMG!!

Nah....yer givin' them too much credit!

Visitor
I can just picture it, someone calls and says a name and hangs up. Could be someone trying to set someone up for a crime they didn't commit. Could be someone has a grudge against someone, so the person is visited and questioned and probably has to lawyer up all because of a name blurted out on a phone call.
So what evidence do they have, the phone call, so they have the "defendant" listen to the call and maybe the "defendant" recognizes the voice.

Have YOU ever called and talked to a dispatcher?  Not saying they are all bad but the questions some ask are unbelievable. You call and say shots fired. Your then asked are you sure its not fireworks. Or your asked if you see the shooter, yeah like your going to open your door and look out. Or your asked and this is my "favorite" DID YOU SEE THE GUN, CAN YOU DESCRIBE IT?  Oh wait dispatcher let me run outside and yell out and ask what type of gun the perp is using.

Visitor Maybe the sky is blue all the time where you live, but where I live dosen't matter what color it is cause there's always a dark cloud hanging over the neighborhood.  So, you stay in your house with blinds closed, you don't sit on your porch and enjoy the day, you can't hear your TV cause there are car doors being open and shut, car stereos blasting, people yelling, bottles being broken, gunfire, fights must I say more? And this goes on all hours of the day and night.

So if your lucky on these bad nights you get a few hours sleep, because your always worrying something will happen to your home, your vehicles, yourself and your family.

And we cannot rely on the police to protect us, especially on the hill, cause you never know when police will respond if at all.

I read Visitor's ultra left wing at the TU and she declares that it is great that they got 28 guns off the street!!

Visitor is a nice ladt and I am sure she means well, but she is very naive. Miss Visitor, you are  DEMOCRAP LIBERAL MOUTHPIECE! How does it feel when you look in the mirror and you realize you SOLD your dignity? A nice lady you are.

And yet he can't defend or address any of the issues brought up in the last 10-12 posts concerning privacy - but he's got the originality to question the sky in my world?  It's a bright open sky - no blue lines that can't be crossed.

I've got a friend, lives between Michigan and Altamont Aves.  She's an older lady, lives alone in a one family house, on a quiet city street, keeps to herself.  There have been shots fired within 100 feet of her front door.  She's SEEN men running past her front door, she's HEARD people talking outside her window.  But because she lives alone, she will NOT open her mouth.  Last time she did, her address went out over the radio and 2 officers sat in her driveway.   She HEARD the men saying something like "5-0 is on the way" - (she had NO idea what that meant) very shortly after her call.  How is that safe for this lady?  Why would she EVER call again?  She's older, can't afford to move and likely won't be around for that much longer .. so she ignores and doesn't bother calling any more because she's AFRAID for her safety.  Is she wrong? I don't think so.

If you can't defend the issues, have the cajones to say - "maybe they're right, let's work together to change it or make it better" - instead of bashing the citizens of the city for not calling in and risking their lives & families. Don't lie and call it an "anonymous" program or tip. It rarely is.  Until the people of this city/community can TRUST their local PD and elected officials, things will remain "as is".
