Gas-to-energy plan is complete
Schenectady officials say savings are expected in electric, heating costs

SCHENECTADY — The city Wednesday announced completion of a project that turns gas emitted by sewage into energy to power its wastewater treatment plant.

Schenectady put $7 million of upgrades into the plan along the Mohawk River, with much of the money used on what is called a combined heat and power system that turns waste from the sewer system into methane gas. That gas is then fed into an engine that creates electricity and heat for the plant.

Mayor Gary McCarthy said the city expects to save $29,000 a month in electricity and heating costs — a much needed revenue stream as the city struggles with a $5 million deficit carried over from 2011. The plant can now generate an estimated 1,800 megawatt-hours of electricity per year, which is enough to power more than 275 private homes for a year.

The city borrowed about $5.5 million to pay for the project, with $1.5 million coming from grants — the largest supplied by NYSERDA........................>>>>......................>>>>................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Gas-to-energy-plan-is-complete-3530243.php#ixzz1tnl9ZbPi

Someplace on these forums is a great pic of McC standing in front of a window, on a sunny day, with all the lights on behind him.

Maybe they could use the extra KWH to power city hall power waste?

The city borrowed $5.5 million to save $29,000 per month or $348,000 per year. $5.500,000 divided by $348,000 equals 15.804 years to pay for the improvements and that doesn't take into account the cost of maintainence, repair or interest on the loan.

With all these imaginary savings how come McCarthy's joke budget is $5 million in the hole? The DEM morons keep lying about savings and job creation. The truth is finally out. Total DEM fiscal incompetents who can't raise taxes fast enough to cover their insane spending.

They should have spent 50 million on it. Why not? Rebuild City Hall too and spend 200 million. Just Bond it like Blanchfield" would. That way you can have LED lightbuulbs and get several news stories. When that gas converter breaks, no one will know nutin'.

They should attach one of these to McCarthys mouth.

Cost 7 million, saves 29k a month.  It will pay for itself in roughly, oh 300 Months, or 25 years.  Way to go!

I don't spell check!  Sorry...

Maybe noone paid their taxes because they put $30,000 to put new windows in their $80,000 house so they could save $500 per year in heating cost reductions.

"All is well-Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead!" On the day the City finances collapsed the Mayor is cutting the cheese at the s*** plant. WTF! He didn't realize the City was losing $100,000 a week for a year? And McCarthy was all over Mayor Al for a $700,000 shortfall when State pension costs exploded. The State Comptroller must come in and investigate McCarthy, his "work" at Metrograft and takeover the City's finances. Camden New Jersey NORTH without Campbells soup.

I wonder if the $30k is the savings AFTER paying the monthly debt payment?
