SCHENECTADY — The city continues to learn about delinquient tax bills it should never have sold to an out-of-state collection agency, this time a $5,000 charge on Amtrak property that must be paid if the $13.5 million Erie Boulevard reconstruction project is to begin.
Meanwhile, at least nine nonprofits are waiting for the city to pay the collection agency, American Tax Funding of Florida, so that they can avoid foreclosure on their properties.
On Monday night, City Council was expected to approve the Amtrak lien payment. The city needs right-of-way access for the train property, which is a large parking lot that runs from Liberty to Union streets, and cannot do so if there are outstanding unpaid taxes, or liens, on the lot.
