Schools receive failing grades Graduation rates in city districts miss state goals
BY DAVID LOMBARDO Gazette Reporter

The Schenectady City School District’s graduation rate slid slightly in 2011 after making progress in 2010, according to a report card released on Thursday by the state Education Department. The graduation rate for the district was 58 percent for last year’s class, which is one percentage point below where it was in 2010 and fi ve percentage points below the goal set by the state for 2011. The state standard for graduation rates is 80 percent.
There was some growth in graduation rates for Schenectady, however, with “economi- Share your cally disadvantaged” students thoughts on surpassing their targeted rate this story at of 64 percent by one percent- www.daily age point. gazette.com
Interim Superintendent John Yagielski noted that the graduation rate in the high school is actually above the districtwide rate, because the district figure includes students who are educated outside the high school, such as through a BOCES program. The graduation rate for the high school was at 60 percent in 2011, the same as the year before.
“We focus on what is happening at our high school,” he said.
The graduation rates are based on students following a four-year timetable.
The report also revealed that a majority of students in grades 3-8 did not reach profi ciency standards for statewide tests in math and language arts. These results were relatively unchanged from the previous year. Science scores went down a few percentage points for fourth- and eighth-graders, falling to 74 percent and 53 percent, respectively.
There were positive changes in secondary English and math scores, where student profi - ciency increased by two percentage points, to 60 percent in English and 56 percent in math.
“It will take time for these numbers to turn around,” Yagielski said of the district’s scores.
The district has been aware of these numbers for about six months, he said, and has implemented plans to improve them. But these are mostly long-term issues, so the most effective changes won’t lead to positive numbers for a few more years, he said.
“If youngsters in the high school have poor reading skills … that doesn’t get corrected at the high school. You really have to go back as a system to look to build a stronger base,” he said.
Yagielski added that a lot of the positive steps being taken are at a time when budgets are being cut, which could also negate the impact of new policies. .............................>>>>.........................>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00100&AppName=1

This is a belated April Fool's joke right?

It's THE RENAISSANCE in the CITY OF SCHENECTADY.

Wait, this is the ALLEGED RENAISSANCE.

Ok, get those pom poms out, "RAH! RAH!, WHAT ARE WE FOR?!  Better schools.   RAH!  RAH!    How are we gonna do it?!  MORE MONEY    RAH!  RAH?    How we gonna get more money?!    RAH!   RAH!    HIKE THOSE TAXES!    RAH!   RAH!   Give more taxpayers' money out to fix up more buildings for millioniares, exempt the businesses from every paying taxes, HIKE THE TAXES ON THE HOMEOWNERS!   RAH!  RAH!"

I hear the voice of the board's big cheerleader for high taxes saying that.  Yeah, now much of an appearance this week, must be getting more difficult to make an appearance when, with every passing day he's challenged to provide evidence and cannot do so.

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Maybe the authorities are finally realizing what a perv he is ... stalking teenage boys websites, youtube accounts, etc.  His obsession with schools is really kinda creepy.

Tax money well spent on compulsory schooling.  It is obvious they need to lower scoring standards in order to increase the graduation rate and justify their existence.

Why is it that failing school districts always seem to push blame on $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ ????
Through out the years, the district has had an ample supply of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and yet still no improvement.

What is the price for an education these days???

If teachers and administrators were paid 6 figure salaries, then they might be able to get through to these kids. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. MONEY...

It is most disappointing to see board members write and post such hateful and spiteful comments on this most solemn and sacred day of the year.  It is so very insulting to the fine children and their very dedicated, hard working, and underpaid teachers in the city’s school district.  You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

I shall pray for you

Most would agree. But remember that the city folks who send their kids to private schools are also paying for this failing school system!! Kinda like adding insult to injury.....yes?

Yes BT....but bureaucracy in education is rampant.....

Not like the good ol' days.....never be the same.....kids growing up with "entitlement".

only entitlement we had was to be in school......or be in the principal's office... LOL

Obviously, she follows Hubbard and his leadership ways - finding scripture and sentiments convenient, but not really meaningful.  She's got the words, but what she, like her nephew, puts into practice, sucks.
