Parent -- you obviously do NOT pay attention very closely when DemocraticVoiceOfReason and MANY others who are VERY much in tune with the issue are saying..   They are TRYING to assist you and the children... To continuously cast aspersions at the Pastor AND the Bishop -- which are entirely unfounded -- then I can only assume that you are acting in concert with the nattering nayboobs of negativity.   Do NOT listen to any of the negativity regarding the matter that is being spewed by the He-She Monkey or his band of assholes ............   They know NOTHING regarding the gravity of this matter NOR do they care about the lives of the children. I am certain that DemocraticVoiceOfReason has a much better inside handle on the scope of this issue than any of the troublemakers who just want to knock the Church and it's flock DOWN. The Bishop is working on a solution and I myself have made several germane recommendations to him in this regard.   I expect that everyone WILL be pleased at the results.

WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? THE POPE? More like the POOP.

DV, you really do not seem to grasp of cost per student  The cost per student is only $6000 for 84 students. Each student you add lowers the cost per student. Based on the costs of running the school if there were 250 students the cost per student would only be about $2000 per student. You don't seem to be understanding simple division. If the yearly expenses for the school are $504,000 and there are 84 students the cost per student is $6000. If there are 250 the over all costs of running the school do not change, or at least not significantly, and the cost per student goes down dramatically. There is not more to make up. The teacher salary does not increase per student, electrical and heating costs do not go up per student, there is not a significant increase in costs.

Better negotiations in tuitions means more students which means lower cost per student which means less to be made up by other means such as fundraising. And certain fundraiser still seem to do well. Rumor has it that Madeline Sophieraises about $20,000 from their yearly gala.

You don't seem to be understanding what I am saying -- if the COST PER STUDENT is $6,000 at 84 students and the TUITION is $2,000 ...  somehow you have to find the other $4,000 to cover expenses -- and that has to be raised through the parish offertory collection, BINGO, festivals/bazaars, bake sales, diocesan subsidies, etc.

Using your numbers -- 82 students x $6,000 = $504,000.     Then assuming that no additional teachers would be needed and no other additional expenses would be incurred --- if you were to register 250 students ---   %04,000 divided by 250 students  the COST PER STUDENT would be $2,016.  Thus you would only have to raise $4,000 from other non-tuition sources.

The question still becomes .. WHERE DO YOU GET THE ADDITIONAL 168 STUDENTS FROM?     And if you have a negotiated tuition ... if that were such a simple thing to do ... then St John's would not have been struggling as it has been struggling for the past (at least) 6 years.    [I use that 6 year figure because I know that at the start of the pastoral planning process in 2006 .. it was very clearly stated that St. John's School was struggling then and the situation only continued to decline over the years since.)

ROFL

We have to remember DV, the big cheerleader for government run everything.   He wants and supports government theaters, government bakeries, government hair salons, government gyms (not that he would use one--public or private), government hotels, government restaurants, government hotels, government gin mills, etc.

The same guy who stated on these boards his total opposition to alternatives to the government school, i.e., charter schools, and while he made comments that seemed to indicate he supported private schools, he TOTALL REFUSED to acknowledge that people in Schenectady CANNOT continue to pay the taxes on the millioniares downtown AND afford tuition at the Catholic schools (or any private schools for that matter).

And remember, there IS funding by the government for Catholic schools.   DV would say "oh for shame"

DV said something earlier in this thread about just having one Catholic school, consolidate everything.   Where?   At BG?   Again, DV is not, never was, and never will be a parent.  He knows ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about being a parent.   There was MAJOR concern back about 20 years ago when the 7th and 8th grades at the Catholic elementary schools in the  city were moved into BG.  Parents had concerns on a variety of things, despite the better control/watching over the students by the schools administration, allowed because it's not a government school.  Apparently they have Gr 6 today.  So the Grades 6 to 8 are on one floor of the school and the 9 to 12 are on another.   So, I guess "mr DV know it all" can tell us where in the BG school they will fit K thru 5.

Yes, let's hear from the guy who knows NOTHING WHATSOEVER about parenting speak about what parents want for their children, what they are willing to do for their children, etc.

And the news said the number of students went down by 2/3 in six years.   Hmm, that means they had about 250 kids 6 years agoi.  That's a very short time after this priest became the pastor, a short couple years after the current pastor eliminated fundraisers in his obvious determination to make the school fail.   6 years and a few for which people realized he was not helping the school.

And again, where is the pastor?   Why did the pastor flee the country?    DV claims to know so much, but he REFUSES to answer why the pastor won't face the parents?

According to your dates the it seems as though St John's started struggling shortly after Father Carlino's arrival...school does well for 140 years and within a decade of a new pastor it goes under. Kind of suspicious isn't it? And according to the superintendent of schools St Johns has only had financial issues the past three years.

The cost right now is not $2,000. It is between $3700-$5000. You get those additional children by lowering the cost  to $2,000-$2,500. Lower it for some based on a sliding scale or have greater discounts for second, third, etc children. The whole 100+ children could not be made up in one year, but the economy is starting to turn around and better tuition rates would mean increased enrollment. Add in better fundraising efforts in the meantime to cover the gaps.

You are correct. But the key here is 'better fundraising'. St. Anthony's, Our Lady of Assumption and The Queen of peace church have successful fundraisers every year and have for decades! they have an enthusiastic priest and parishioners. They also have no problem asking for an extra collect during mass. They have no problem asking and receiving donations. St. Johns could have and should have promoted their school more aggressively. They are located in the city where the school district is in shambles. St. Johns was another/better alternative and should have been promoted as such.

I agree with you Parent. And I do hope that a positive solution is in the future for all of the kids and parents!

Let's to back in time a bit:

Quoted Text
Quoted from Democratic Voice of Reason   December 10, 2010    6:40  pm

Public School Districts are required by law to provide transportation and other financial resources to
charter schools within their district. Every property owner in the city pays school taxes and a PART of that
school tax goes to fund the charter schools. Funds that could be going to improve our public schools or funds
that could be given back to the property owners in the form of tax cuts.
THAT is how the charter schools drain OUR tax dollars from OUR public schools

Catholic schools do NOT take taxpayer dollars
.

Quoted Text
Excerpt Quoted from Democratic Voice of Reason   December 13, 2010    12;30 pm

If you are opposed to high taxes --- you are a fool to be opposing Catholic schools which don't take
a dime of taxpayer dollars and support charter schools that TAKE your taxpayer dollars.

I will continue to support Catholic schools AND work to lower public school taxes .. both are worthy causes.

.

Typical DV, NOT a homeonwer, NOT a taxpayer, NOT a parent (never was any, never will be any of these)

Catholic schools MOST DEFINITELY DO get money from tax dollars.   Typical DV, thinks the money comes from nowhere to pay the transportation costs.  And ditto for the books!   To list a FEW things paid for Cathollic schools by TAX DOLLARS!!!

And he's going to continue to "work for lower public schol taxes"   Yeah, work to lower the school taxes on the well-heeled and politically connected downtown who DV's buddy dems give out 100% tax exemptions.   Yeah, work to lower the school taxes for Philip Morris CEO of Proctors with his illegal STAR exemption on a house he does NOT live in.    Yeah, work to lower the school taxes on former FAILED Schdy school supt Ely - the guy who left not only this city, but also left the state two years ago but still has a STAR exemption on his Schdy house ILLEGALLY.

And DV claims he's gong to continue to support Catholic schools but shows his total support for the closing of the only school in Schenectady and yet DV is too chicken to reply to why the pastor fled the country rather than facing the parents at this very difficult time.

School makes peace on new playground
Grant funds multipurpose area
BY BETHANY BUMP Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Bethany Bump at 843-2856 or bbump@dailygazette.net.

The tire swing had to come down at St. John the Evangelist School.
The recess favorite ….
Kids, parents and school officials mingled behind the iron gates of the Union Street school Saturday for an open house and ribbon-cutting for the new playground, an area designed with multipurpose surface games and no traditional playground equipment like swings, slides or monkey bars.
“The reason it’s peaceful …
Up to 50 children used the old playground at one time, Keenan said, so when employees from Schenectady County’s Strategic Alliance for Health visited the school in September to see if the principal would be interested in a $3,000 grant for a peaceful playground, she said yes right away.
The playground allows students to learn conflict resolution, improve their motor skills and coordination, practice the alphabet and learn shapes, colors and numbers, she said.
“It’s great to be so dispersed,” Keenan said. “It allows the kids to be distributed throughout the playing area, and they’re engaging in healthy, educational, purposeful play.”
To prepare for its unveiling, St. John the Evangelist parents and gym teachers began teaching students the rules for the variety of games featured on the playground, which include multi-use circles, quadrants, lines and courts. The younger students can search for a color or a shape, while older students might play dodge ball, kickball or shuffleboard, said Julie Shaw, chairwoman of the school board, who also designed the playground. ............................>>>>...............................>>>>.................... http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01401&AppName=1

True, these schools are better. And DV keeps saying parents have the choice. Yeah, let's see DV. who claims to be "well heeled" from his "investments," let's see if he pays the tuition for the kids to go there.

Watch him say "oh I donate to my alma mater." That doesn't do diddly squat for the parents in the city who are FORCED to send their kids to the sucky public schools because they can't afford to pay the the taxes for the millionaires downtown and pay tuition also.

If the parents send their kids to the Catholic or private schools, they risk losing their homes to tax seizure when they don't pay the taxes.

Yeah, a lot DV knows about finances. When you are the typial household in the city with an income of $30,000 a year. well, DV, tell us HOW you pay $6,000 a year PER CHILD to attend Catholic school or $10,000 or $15,000 for a non-religious private school. Well?????

Very nice comments  of a guy who has stated he's on St Adalbert's parish council, has been part of the pastoral planning process, and a town official in Rotterdam.  And now he criticizes all the things that helped keep St John's open and while he claims he "knows for a FACT" that the pastor worked hard to keep the school open, he refuses to explain what this work was, and he refuses to explain why the pastor fled the country rather than facing the parents in the most difficult time

Talked with some folks who have family that attend SJE. They loved the school and made it clear that the school isn't closing because the school is 'bad'. It is closing because of Carlino!! They said that if Father Provost was back, there would be no problems and the enrollment would be higher. they also said that it was Carlino that  allowed St. Anthony’s (his preferred parish) to reopen a Kindergaten, taking away from St. John’s.

Don't know if this is all true or not.....just sayin'

The school is closing because the enrollments were too low to sustain the school.  Your uninformed or based-on-gossip comments do NOTHING to help the situation and just prove that you .. like the other nayboobs have a) an axe to grind with the Catholic Church  and/or b) an axe to grind with the pastor.

You even say --  "don't know if this ia true or not" -- so why would you post such uninformed accusations?   It can't be for any good reason.   It is just par for the course for the nayboob right-wing nuts who post here --  just throw some crap-filled post up on the wall to humor yourselves .. and then sit around like a bunch of 4th graders laughing over a dirty joke.

The Superintendent of schools told us at the meeting that the dioceses told Carlino that he should not allow the kindergarten at St Anthony's to open because it would have a negative impact on St John's. Father Carlino allowed it anyway. This is true per representatives of the church itself. Not fourth grade rumors.

This is absolutely horrible news. What DVR/SB/Hamburger refuses to admit is that he is against ANY Charter school. Ditto that horrible teachers union mouthpiece Taxin Tonko. This traps the poorest students in the worst government schools-with no hope. Catholic schools get tax money but not enough to cover all costs.

Schenectady desperately needs a new charter school. This would save taxpayer money, provide educational choice and have a school with uniforms/discipline. Albany has over 10 charter schools and their tests scores are the highest in the City. Father Morrette could turn around the parish in two seconds.
