The troubled Schenectady Museum has announced another executive director has been replaced. This is the 3rd change in six years. Attendance is down over 40% as school groups cut back on visits. The museum keeps losing money and lost over $800,000 in 2010. Another only in Schenectady County-too small for a County too big for an asylum.
Many museums across the country (in fact -around the world) have seen attendance drop significantly over the past decade or so. Many museums across the country have been struggling to control expenses, attract visitors and otherwise survive in a era when fewer and fewer people visit museums and fewer and fewer people are willing to be patrons/sustaining members with large financial contributions.
And it isn't exactly news that Schenectady Museum has been having difficulties -- there has been a long debate over its mission, location and other factors.

the schools aren't spending the $$$ on educational subjects such as history/museums..........HOWEVER..........they all seem to find the $$$$ for sex ed classes aka cucumbers and condoms. Guess they think that is more important....yes?
Although...most of 'historical museum' information is now readily available on the WORLD WIDE WEB! For that matter...so is sex education.
PRIORITIES!

OUR Museum is NOT alone in experiencing these issues due to the GOP Recession that began under BUSH.
Museum attendance began declining long before the most recent recession -- even before the "post-911 recession". There are a number of factors -such as - new technology, "cultural illiteracy" and one can argue that maybe there are too many museums for the "market place" to sustain.
My personal opinion - There is nothing compelling to spark my interest in visiting the Schenectady Museum. Once you have seen the planetarium a few dozen times and the museum's "collections" (such as they are) .. there really is nothing exceptional to draw one there.
I am a sustaining member of a number of museums - including the Norman Rockwell in Stockbridge and the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield. Using those two as examples - they have an exceptionally good permanent collection ... then they bring in very good quality, interesting temporary exhibits. It seems like they are really making an effort to give the public a good reason to come for the first visit and return .. seasonally or annually. This is something that can NOT be said for the Schenectady Museum.
My suggestion - Is that the Edison Museum on Broadway, the Schenectady Historical Society, the Schenectady Museum and some other local historical groups should come together to develop ONE decent museum in a good facility with ample parking. I have a number of ideas on sites and other parts of a "conceptual plan" for such a museum.

Guess the museum isn't riding the same gravy train Morris and Proctors are on...the Taxpayer Funded Express. $800,000? Please, that's pocket change for the millions Proctors cleared from the Plex. Guess history isn't as important as arts...you know....priorities and all. Wonder if the museum charges their volunteers too.
This museum is in free fall because of their decision to abandon the arts fro dusty radios and tubes. Exactly what the Edison offers. It gets even funnier.
The FACT that the Schenectady Museum was in existence LONG before there was an Edison Museum in Schenectady and the FACT that the Schenectady Museum has always had science and technological exhibits doesn't seem to phase the nayboobs. They have never allowed the TRUTH or FACTS to interfere with their continued pursuit of their own uninformed, ignorant point of view.
