SCHENECTADY Police unveil tool to track sex offenders BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Steven Cook at 395-3122 or scook@dailygazette.net.
City residents now have a more user-friendly way to track convicted sex offenders in their neighborhood, police said Wednesday. Police are set to formally announce participation in a nationwide website called Offender-Watch. The site, which is linked to from the Schenectady Police Department’s site, SchenectadyPD.com, allows parents to search around a specific address and even set up email alerts when details change, police said. “It shows you which offenders are in the area and what level they’re at,” police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken said. “With some, it even goes into what crimes they were convicted of.” Residents can set up email alerts centered around their home, work or children’s day care or school, police said. On the site, offenders are displayed on a map around the specifi ed address. Police said they hope the program lessens anxiety by proactively alerting residents when offenders move nearby. Police can also use the program to ensure that offenders don’t violate any safety buffers around protected institutions. The site includes all Level 2 and 3 offenders. Level 1 offenders can also be seen. Each level has differing amount of information that is released. Level 2 and Level 3 offenders can include specifi c addresses, but Level 1 offenders include only general ZIP codes. It’s with the Level 1 offenders where the police department’s effort can have an advantage over the state Department of Criminal Justice Services site that offers similar services. The state agency says its site can’t include information on Level 1 offenders. Police departments, entrusted with community notification efforts, however, can include that information, but only the offender’s ZIP code. According to the state agency, as of Tuesday, Schenectady County has 116 Level 1 sex offenders, 97 Level 2 offenders and 60 Level 3 offenders. .........................>>>>...................>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01202&AppName=1
