Heard yesterday from a guy who's building the SCCC housing for BBL across from the college that there was a significant amount of temporary shoring put up inside the old armory after the flooding, which is now giving way.  They're supposedly going to make decisions soon on it's demise.  He estimated the shoring installed won't last another 3 months, max. It'll cost millions to fix - or they could just tear it down.  He said it would be more economical to take it down - but didn't know what they'd do yet.

This is sad...another piece of history down the tubes....instead on concentrating on the

bars and restaurants on State St....this should have been addressed years ago....where is

the maintenance for what is much needed to our infrastructure.???

What are these people thinking........remember going there years ago as a young girl to watch the

circus.....and other things....always was fascinated by that piece of architectural history..

ride by it many times on my way to Glenville.......

WHY was it let go.....and no maintained.....what a bunch of idiots in government....

Didn't they try to auction this off a few years ago - and failed?

Nobody wanted the beast of a building. It was in dyer need of costly repairs. It is antiquated and has no use for 21st century development.

They'll knock it down......transfer the property or sell it 'cheap' to METROPLEX/GILLEN...........who will in turn sell it to BBL, Highbridge or Galesi for a $1.00........ will be developed (someday) and be tax exempt for 10 years!

Whenever I have visited other states/cities.....you see what is historical and maintained for that

purpose.....21st century is now...but the past is just as important.....and I will attest to this...

architecture was more awesome and creative than it is now........

What's wrong with maintaining and preserving history.....an example of preserving is

Union College.....old public library....and that is outside the zone selected for "renaissance."

Out with the old...in with new....but preserve...preserve....maintain...maintain.....

AND to add.....the old Veteran's park had a great building years ago...monumental for

history.....BUT that too gone....too much of the city's history has been torn down and has

caused the city it's demise....adding.....many cities outside this area have preserved history

and we have let it go like it never existed...

the taxpayers can't afford it any longer!!! Not now any way.

folks are out of work, losing their jobs, losing their homes, rising healthcare costs, rising living expenses, over taxation, a national debt out of control.....not to mention the corruption.

No....I'd say that the taxpayers would put restoring a historical building at the bottom of their priority list for now. The last thing they want to see is more useless spending.

Look, I understand all that.....but....these buildings were always put on the back burner...

maintenance was not done properly.....what were the city/county workers doing all these years....

that's my problem....when you have something of value...you have to take care and maintain it...

that to me is why this has happened.....all administrations past/present are at fault...

seems that favors, hiring family, friends made for the unqualified and irresponsible people hired to

do their jobs......10-15 men  standing around a repair to a water line..while one man is in the hole

This building is owned by the state Division of Military and Naval affairs.  According to Wikipedia, "The state will be auctioning off the armory in late 2009, for a minimum bid of $500,000."

Looks like it was on the auction block in 2009 - but later canceled.

I said it almost a year ago -- the armory is a white elephant that is beyond repair -- it should be torn down  and the site put to better use ... preferably a use that puts it back on tax rolls.

where were you raised......and how do you distinguish what is to be saved....

apparently you don't believe is history....if you have traveled like you state and ALL OVER

then you would see preservation of history all over those areas......and that comes from mindful

intelligent residents who want to save history as well as build for the 21st century...

What  legacy for the future will remain ....nothing in the city....when architecture was at its best...

So sad.....the Armory is lost anyway ....the building for SCCC takes up the view now.....

are they building a bridge so that students can cross to main bldg...without any problem???

By what criteria are you judging that the Schenectady Armory is a historical building .. a landmark in need of preservation ??????????????????

Just because a building is old -- does not make the building historical.  What event happened there that makes it worthy of preservation?    Is the style of the building unique and/or worthy of preservation?   Was the building designed by an historic architect?    

I have nothing against preserving, restoring or in some cases the appropriate "adaptive reuse" of older, historic structures.  In fact, I believe it is a good thing to do.  But if the building is not truly historic - but just old -- and has deteriorated beyond repair/ reasonable cost of repair -- then it should be torn down and make way for something new.
