SCHENECTADY Adult store makes move Building taken for Erie Blvd. project BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter
The Another World adult business is about to reopen after city officials forced the owner to move to a more discrete location. The business was prominently located on Erie Boulevard, one of the entranceways to the city. It was seized through eminent domain at the end of the year to make room for a $14 million streetscape project. Owner Rocco Palmer was paid about $300,000 to move to another property he owns at 1354 Lower Broadway. It was a welding company’s workshop, but has been vacant since that company moved to Amsterdam last year in anticipation of Palmer’s forced relocation. The business will be in the Broadway neighborhood’s industrial section, near manufacturing businesses and a closed poultry butcher. It will be just off the main road. Palmer started construction there last fall, but asked the city not to close him down until the work was done in the spring. But city officials were in no mood to dicker after Palmer almost single-handedly delayed the Erie Boulevard streetscape project for four years in his fight to save his building. The city could not go out to bid for the project until it had control of all right-of-ways — including Palmer’s building. So the building was locked and the sign covered with paint within days of the court order. Palmer still isn’t happy about the situation. “I’ve been shuffled around,” he said, criticizing what he characterized as the city breaking a promise to let him stay open until his new building was ready. He is still arguing the matter in court, even as workers fi nish the new building. “We expect to be open soon,” Palmer said. “About a month, I think.” He thinks his business was targeted because he sells adult novelties. It was the only business taken to make room for the project. “You can buy the same stuff in Colonie. In the mall, you can buy the same stuff,” he said. The project — and the plan to remove Another World — started with former Mayor Brian U. Stratton, who began pushing for it in his first campaign for mayor. Mayor Gary McCarthy has inherited the project and intends to begin work this spring. “I’m not going to comment on an individual business, but some businesses are more desirable than others,” he said when asked to respond to Palmer’s complaints. “I’m just looking for a greater utilization of all of Erie Boulevard. We’re looking to attract a higher utilization of real estate.” ..........................>>>>.................>>>>.............................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....00903&AppName=1#

So we move the DSS and the Adult Book store in the same location on Broadway?
Good way to begin a slum.
Forget about deteriorating neighborhoods, Schenectady can simply relocate everything into one section of trash.
Way to go McMuffin...you're certainly a trend setter. |

Why didn't Palmer relocate at his State St address....the old Gourmet...
right in the heart of slum land.....would have been a better fit.

Nice.
I believe that the bellevue folks protested this move awhile ago when it was very first proposed. And of course it fell on deaf ears. And there is a difference between the adult world and cvs..... The bellevue folks didn't want the 'porn shop' AT ALL....... Rotterdamians had issues with the cvs as first proposed. It had nothing to do with the 'type' of business. apples and oranges imho |

Correct me if I'm wrong - yall don't want ANY drug store there .. it's been said several times in this forum that "there's a Rite Aid across the street, we dont need another one" So it's not about the "type" of business? So, a Walgreens would be welcome? I don't recall any vocal dis-approval of the porn shop. There's nothing that could have been done about it - it meets the zoning criteria - but I don't recall city council meetings where people voiced their disapproval. |

True MT, the only people who get a heads-up are neighbors...and in this new Broadway-Soon-To-Be-Slum-Strip, the only neighbors are DSS. Who's going to protest? Galesi? Can't wait for the pitbull shop to find a nice place to set up there. |

I think I heard many times it was not the fact it was a drugstore as much as it was the size and impact of such a business to what is already a congested area. |

Be careful what you wish for. There already is a pit bull shoppe Off the Chain further up Broadway by the Rotterdam line. Where are the brain dead politicians demanding it's closure? Even when someone was bit nearby a wall of silence. Erie Blvd is a total wreck because of Death Ray and his idiotic plans. A high tech corridor? ROTFLMAO. Wendy's and one closed business after another. From the old Car Wash to Trustco to Olender's to the Pentagon. The entire mess should be bulldozed from Nott to the Main Plant. But because of the fiscal incompetents ruining the City there is no money for that. |

Yes, but I think for that one, it's more of a matter where the line is vs. where the actual sign for the line is. That may actually be considered that it's in Rotterdam, even though it's on the Schenectady side as far as "signage" for the official borders is. |

And we are all sure that DV, and his family, and his extended family, will all be going there because, as DV says, it's supporting local businesses |
