SARATOGA SPRINGS
Cop, firefighter drug testing under discussion
Idea sparked by firefighter arrest

BY LEE COLEMAN Gazette Reporter

The City Council debated the use of random drug testing for city police offi cers and fi refi ghters at its meeting Tuesday.
The issue stems from the arrest of a six-year member of the city Fire Department three weeks ago on a felony charge of crack cocaine possession. The fi refi ghter, Justin Moran, 31, of Saratoga Springs was on involuntary medical leave from the Fire Department at the time of his arrest.
Public Safety Commissioner Chris Mathiesen said he does not personally feel that random drug testing is needed in the Fire Department but agreed to explore the issue after Mayor Scott Johnson and Accounts Commissioner John Franck said they both thought testing should be done.
Mathiesen said the city Police Department does have a clause in the union contract calling for random drug testing but this has not been activated. He said he will be seeking input from the Saratoga Springs Police Benevolent Association on the issue.
“We don’t have a problem with illegal drugs in our Fire Department,” Mathiesen said, repeating that for the Police Department. But if the community wants random drug testing he will look carefully at the issue, including costs and the reliability of such testing.
“To me it’s a no brainer,” Franck said, noting city firefighters are now operating an ambulance and drive large fi re trucks, sometimes at high speeds. ...............>>>>...........>>>>.........http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01102&AppName=1

If you test one... you test all!
Why stop at just firemen?  Why not everyone in govt, or no one in govt.

An independent drug testing company should test randomly every city employee on a rotating basis so that every
one gets tested... from the mayor down to the dog catcher.

Agreed!  All government employees and everybody receiving a direct government welfare(social or corporate)should get hair follicle tested.  Let's start putting mandates on the government worker to protect the citizens from them.

NO CIC... LETS START WITH THE MAYOR AND THE COMMON COUNCIL.
Lead from the front... not from the back hiding in a closet.

Drug testing these days is necessary...if that was put into place the number of all government

employees would be low.....seems they are above the law....and it's just a matter of time

when they get caught.....they drug test for airport employees, and other businesses....

it should be a no brainer....but then when does the gov have brains

there are ways around drug testing to have a result of negative....unfortunately , the internet

has that info .....and the cops know it too.....so, what do u have...

not a very good p[picture of the drug addicts.....also, alcohol is a drug and is not a common

cause of drug abuse....that is a misnomer...

Go to any drug rehab and you will be alcoholics and many are what they call cross-addicted...

and they are treated as drug addicts.....

SO, any drug, beer, liquor, etc... is considered a drug of choice....

AND NO ONE SEEMS TO THINK THAT HAVING DRINKING  BEER EXCESSIVELY  AND GETTING DWI IS

CONSIDERED AS AN ABUSER OF DRUGS......

TOO BAD NO ONE KNOWS THE TRUE MEANING OF BEING TESTED FOR DRUGS....AND THAT

ALCOHOLISM IS JUST THAT

Of course because they carry guns, use judgment that may save or cost lives in a split second and their jobs demand alert physicality. Something Box is certain to reason out, but CAN'T because he is a liberal.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
