Data: City poverty rate highest in state

    Gloversville has the highest poverty rate in the state among families with related children, according to the latest federal Census data.
    It also leads the state in terms of percentage of households using food stamps, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program assistance, or both, according to Census data.
    The data from the American Community Survey show Gloversville had a poverty rate of 13.4

    Gloversville ranked 243 in the nation in terms of its poverty rate. Raymondville, Texas, was ranked first with a 39.4 percent poverty rate. The national poverty rate for all families was 10.1 percent as of 2010. The Jamestown/Dunkirk/ Fredonia metropolitan area ranked second-highest in New York in poverty status of families, according to the Census data. In the Capital Region, Amsterdam ranked eighth with a poverty rate of 10.4 percent and the Albany/Schenectady/Troy metropolitan area ranked 25th statewide with a poverty rate of 6.6 percent.
    In the larger Gloversville area, 14.03 percent or 3,228 of the 23,006 households, collected food stamps, SNAP or both between 2006 and 2010, ranking it first in the state. Amsterdam was fourth, with 13.4 percent, or 2,723 of the 20,326 households in the immediate region collecting benefits. The ONLY reason Schenectady is not #1 is because it's lumped into Albany and Troy. Would love to see what whould happen if you put Schenectady on its own? Gloversville would have some stiff competition....
