ROTTERDAM
Official critical of PBA negotiations
Propriety of ex-cops representing town called into question

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

Town Board member Robert Godlewski is questioning whether two former law enforcement officers should be spearheading contract negotiations with Rotterdam’s Police Benevolent Association.
Supervisor Harry Buffardi served as the Schenectady County sheriff for 11 years, while Deputy Supervisor Wayne Calder spent more than three decades on the town police force, before retiring as the department’s deputy chief in 2002. Godlewski said this long record of service in law enforcement could be perceived as a conflict of interest as the town works toward an agreement with the police union.
“In this case, it’s not what they think,” he said, “It’s how the public is going to look at it, and I think it puts them in an unfavorable light.”
Godlewski, deputy supervisor under the administration of Frank Del Gallo, also questioned why no one was appointed to the board’s employee relations committee for the PBA during last month’s organizational meeting. He said the board has always appointed two members of the committee, to which he belonged last year.
“This committee usually goes hand in hand in negotiations,” he said, referencing the PBA.
Buffardi was unaware of the openings, but he bristled at Godlewski’s comments about former law enforcement offi cers participating in PBA contract negotiations.
“I don’t back away from a decorated career in law enforcement,” he said Friday. “I would think that would be an advantage to managing a police department, not a disadvantage.”
The police union contract expired at the end of 2010. The previous contract negotiated by former Supervisor Steve Tommasone was ratified in November 2008, after a prolonged stalemate with the PBA.
    Del Gallo and Godlewski hired labor attorney Bryan Goldberger to negotiate with the union after taking office in 2010. But those negotiations didn’t yield a contract before Del Gallo left offi ce, and Goldberger was dismissed once Buffardi took office last month. ..................>>>>...................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....p;

Elections have consequences.

Did the voters not consider this imminent conflict of interest when casting their ballots?

Rotterdam elected the foxes to watch the hen house.  The guy that couldn't pay his taxes on time is negotiating the largest part of the budget.   Good thing residents are running out of money for them to take.  If there isn't a pay freeze and additional contributions toward their benefits, then it's a give away and total disregard for the taxpayers.

Some of us saw the hand writing on the wall but too many others voted for the party/friends without a thought of the consequences of their action. It will cost all of us dearly for their lack of thought.

I wonder if the former deputy supervisor got his talking points from his new comrades/handlers in the GOP ?

I think I actually saw this last night - around 10:45, lurking in the shadows.  I did see two of the "finest" sitting chatting near 5 corners, but other than that, nothing.

Burglaries every other day and not one word from our sherriff or deputy about caution, tip line, extra patrols, vigilance

You should have seen the punk on my street run when he noticed the red dot focus on him.

Good for you! Many folks are starting to defend, protect and secure their families and property. Good job!

Like I said.....it is a community effort and this info needs to get out to the residents before they become victims to these drug addicts! These incidents are becoming so frequent now, that it will be very difficult to brush it under the rug.

Folks should be posting areas that have been hit or have seen suspicious activity and pass the word on. Cause most of this crap never gets 'out there'! Rotterdamians just better hope that it has a stronger judge/court system than the city does!
