SCHENECTADY
Broader DNA databank plan gets local officials’ support

BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter

Law enforcement officials in Schenectady County came together Tuesday to support a proposed expansion of the state DNA databank to include samples from everyone convicted of misdemeanors in the state.
Supporting them was the victim of a home invasion in Schenectady that was solved through the existing DNA databank. And law enforcement offi cials argued that an expansion of the bank could lead to more crimes being solved.
Schenectady Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett called the bill long overdue. He argued that nobody gives a second thought to fingerprints taken at the time of an arrest. DNA is taken for the databank only after conviction.
“When you fail to utilize the entire potential of a tool of criminal justice, that has a dual purpose of exonerating the innocent people and holding the guilty people accountable, when you fail to use that tool … how do you say the criminal justice system is at its most efficient level?” Bennett asked.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has pro- posed expanding the current system to include DNA from those convicted of all misdemeanors. The current bank generally includes DNA taken from those convicted of felonies, and some misdemeanors, amounting to about 48 percent of those convicted of crimes.
The expansion would include the rest of the misdemeanors and felonies under other areas of law, including felony driving while intoxicated and aggravated animal cruelty, offi cials said.
The proposal has its critics, including the New York Civil Liberties Union.
Melanie Trimble, executive director of the Capital Region chapter, said the proposal lacks safeguards against fraud, mislabeling or contamination. “We don’t have enough safeguards in place in order to ensure samples are pristine and accurate,” she said.
Those advocating the expansion argue that once a match is reported, further testing is done to ensure accuracy before local labs and law enforcement are notifi ed. State labs can also handle the excess load, bringing the total to 7,000 cases monthly, under a 10,000 case capacity, they said.
If approved, the proposal would take effect Oct. 1, with anyone convicted on or after that date being included. Children in family court and youthful offenders would not be included. ........................>>>>.........................>>>>................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00102&AppName=1

right now....until some 'group' demands more protection by the government from their fellow neighbors.....what has happened to our society?????? something different? or is it the same? we became this 'civilized' somehow....anyone
have a clue if a databank was involved? or were folks stronger in their own right? are we that pansy, peace fools? that we call ourselves peace lovers only to sell out our liberties to pretend we are something that we truly are not?
ie: letting someone else do what is our responsibility?

One would hope that criminals don"t get the idea to "plant" someone else's DNA at a crime scene thereby incriminating someone innocent.

And would this mean everyone would need an alibi at all times as to their whereabouts, if someone did such an act, such as planting someone elses DNA at a crime scene who was totally innocent of any involvement thereof.

Or someone else might plant it.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Eventually, when there are surveillance drones over every American city they will catch the person on camera planting someone else's DNA.  GOD BLESS AMERICA.

urine in a cup or a stool sample is easy to obtain....as are blood samples from used women's products in bathrooms....anyone who thinks folks wouldn't know about this are nuts....

Oh good.  If and when the drones arrive they can keep tabs on all of the taxpayer funded employees to be sure we get the most for our dollars.   But then again can the controller of the recorded content be trusted to report all that it sees?

I think they are developing a signal scrambler for public employees to wear that will make them invisible to drone surveillance.  Just like now, they are exempted from the rules that the people they are supposedly serving have to obey.
