.” Kilcullen predicted that the police union would use it as a bargaining chip, insisting on take-home privileges for those officers if the council tries to change the privileges for other officers. When the contract bargaining begins the city officials who bargain with the police union will just have to learn to say the word NO instead of caving into to the unions every demand.

AMEN !!!

Now watch the big cheerleader post here claiming the "first responders"  (every city paid cop, firefighter, EMS, mayor, city council rep--except Vince Riggi--and all department heads and asst dept heads) should each have a taxpayer funded SUV no matter where they live, even if it was another state, and the taxpayers should pay all their gas and that they should be allowed to use the vehicle for attending their children's games, going on personal vacatiions, etc.

I DEFY the cheerleader to tell us what REAL first reponders have provided by their employers, i.e, the doctors and nurses that must get to the hospitals and offices no matter what the weather!

And you don't know a stretch of the truth to make a point.

Now, ham, tell us, do YOU believe that it's perfectly acceptable for these "first responsders" to CHOOSE to live FAR OUTSIDE the city and then bill the financially struggling homeonwers for their pleasure drives home?

And Ham, I guess a doctor is not emergency personnel, huh?   Do hospitals give doctors who work, say, for Cardiology Associates, SUV's to drive home every day so that they can get to the hospital when one of their patients needs surgery?

When you're in Hudson visiting someone with your elderly parent and your parent falls and breaks his/her hip, and you take the parent to Columbia Memorial Hospital, does Schdy Regional Orthopedic provide SUV's to the doctors so that your parent's orthopedic doctor can rush to Columbia Memorial to do surgery?

But again, do you believe that these "first responders" are entitled to SUV's even if it means homeonwers lose their homes to pay the taxes so the "first responders" can CHOOSE to avoid paying the highest taxes and live far far far away from the city?

Olsen defends cars for utility workers
City Council still trying to reduce take-homes

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

General Services Commissioner Carl Olsen pulled out all the stops Tuesday as he fought for his employees’ privilege to take home city vehicles.
If 15 police officers get to take their cars home, Olsen said, his 16 on-call workers should get the same privilege.
His workers get called in more often and they make less money than the police, Olsen told the City Council.
They also live nearby. Unlike the police, there’s no 20-mile commutes among Olsen’s staff. Out of 16 employees, only four live outside the city, and three live just two miles away. The fourth lives in Clifton Park, but he’s retiring next month, and his replacement will live in the city.
And unlike police, who are called to interview witnesses or gather evidence from places already secured by on-duty offi cers, Olsen’s workers must rush to stop water and sewer breaks before they cause major damage.
“Nobody has to bring their car home, by any means,” Olsen said. “The reason they bring their vehicle home is to hasten their response time...In particular the water department, to delay their response by 20-30 minutes increases property damage.”
The City Council met in committee Tuesday to continue work on a new policy that would ban most employees from taking home city cars.
Two weeks ago the council met with the police and Chief Mark Chaires offered to stop driving his car home. His top supervisors might also be able to share a car at work — eliminating one car from the fleet. But he urged the council to let all the other officers take their cars home.
Tuesday’s meeting with Olsen started out civilly, with council members joking that if no one needs their cars, the meeting could be adjourned immediately. But Council President Denise Brucker ignited a fi restorm when she laid out her proposed rules. “We want to reduce the fl eet,” she said. “And we want less people taking cars home. And if they are taking cars home, they’ll pay mileage.” Olsen didn’t like that. “If I didn’t think it was to the benefit of the taxpayers, I wouldn’t allow them to take those vehicles home,” he snapped, raising his voice to speak over Brucker. “I think you would lose more in property damage than you’re going to save in [not] taking cars home,” he said.
As for his own city car, he angrily defended it as a necessary perk for someone who is called in after hours 70 to 80 times a year on a salary of $108,000.
“You give me what the chief makes and I’ll buy myself a vehicle,” he said.
The police chief is paid $128,767.
Brucker quickly said, “Carl, this isn’t about you,” but he was not appeased.
He did agree that two workers might not need their cars: the buildings and grounds supervisor and the supervisor in charge of the well fields. But everyone else needs to carry equipment home with them in their car, Olsen said.
He focused on the four employees responsible for water main breaks and the five who handle sewer breaks. City Council members focused on the other seven employees, who handle streets, parks, and city buildings.
Olsen insisted they need cars too, saying, “We have trees that come down. Sometimes that means road closures.”
While council members pushed for fewer take-home cars among Olsen’s workers, they came to the conclusion that the effort might not save much money. .......................>>>>.......................>>>>..............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00900&AppName=1
