Yeha right Cicero - taht argument is convenient - you get to criticize the Department for what you knpow happened and what you suggest uis happening.
TiB - Recall is 4 hours, that includes court, or multiple call backs. For example, if you are off duty and get called back 3 times - that is 12 hours at time and hald without working the entire twelve hours. And, they are paid for being on call. |

So how did we get to that point? That is insane. It's not the cops fault for the most part. Its all legal. They have a sweetheart contract. It really is a perfect storm of a financial mess. Hiring more cops wont help either I dont care what anyone says. Its a variable business, depends on time of day, weather, time of year. Have to be set up for the worst. I understand but with these high taxes, I'd almost rather not have the police. Cant afford them. Let it be the Wild West. |

and are they on honor *paper and written time sheets" or do they actually punch a time clock....
that would make a big difference if it is on the honor system....
and while this is happening....there are no checks ???...and this is published and not questioned or explained ?????
seems to me someone is not watching where they should be....

The dilema is that it would probably cost us more with time cards and you dont want the cop going and punch a clock before responding to an incident.... |

Story on top salaries tried to make cops look bad
The Jan. 25 article “City cops dominate list of top salaries” was an assault on the hard-working people of our city’s police force. They agreed to work 60 hours a week to protect and serve our community, and to insinuate that they manipulated the overtime for some ill-gotten gains is wrong. If they didn’t put in the overtime, how would that have changed a call that came in about the knife-wielding psychopath on drugs at the Gazette? The call for help went out and the police showed up; if they hadn’t, the story would have been about how unresponsive they are to the needs of the citizens. Also, look at how much state police make or, better yet, the suburban police, Guilderland [and] Rotterdam. Our police deserve every penny they are paid. Shame on the Gazette for drawing suspicion to make us doubt and draw attention to an agency that is there for the benefit of all who use our city and its services. I say let’s give them a raise.

What did I tell ya...They could have been paid $1 Million, and every penny is deserved. Reality eludes the government workers. They operate in a vacuum, where market forces do not apply. Their livelihoods are from legal privilege and the coercive power of government. The day of reckoning is upon us. The value of the public employee is going to be downgraded, and Moody's isn't necessary for this downgrade. |

All people want is for the public pensions, salary and benefits to be brought more in line with those in the private sector. |

Not everybody can be a police officer...Who would be left to produce the goods and services the government taxes to pay them? |

Years ago police officers were very underpaid so they made up for it with good benefits plus a good retirement package. Now the police officers get paid very well and still have the good benefits package and retirement which needs to be balanced out. Anyone who works in the enforcement profession has a hard job and deserves to be compensated fairly for their efforts. |

Reply to that is....what about our troops...fighting for the cause of freedom...
they come back and their benefits are NOTTA..
I repsect the police and know what it means to be in law enforcement....you want to come home at the end of your shift.
So do the men in uniform who have put their lives on the line so that our law enforcement can exist.
They should be compensated in the same way....and then some.

what bothers me is that the unions had partners in creating this problem. unions supported politicians who
provided these benfits. so now that the benefits are being reduced maybe they should hold special
elections and require those who got voted into office based on union support to regain those offices without it. |

I understand the argument that public pensions are guaranteed by law. but the other side of that is the plight
of those people in the public sector who devoted their lives to a company then were told after decades of staying
with the company that those pensions were not going to be honored |
