According to what I posted, all options should be studied, reviewed and considered .. I never once stated or suggested that anyone should just "get what they want".

Get your facts straight.

The alleged NEED for these lavish vehicles is the NEED for the cops to quickly get to the scene.    Can you explain, therefore, the logic of allowing the police to live far far far away from the city, perhaps 30, 40 miles?

If they NEED to get to the scene quickly, then why should police be allowed to live 30, 40, miles from the city?   Please explain that.

If they NEED to get to the scene quickly, then why should they be allowed to live a half hour, 45 minutes, an hour, or so away from the city?   Please explain that?

Why is there a need to STUDY the options?    The taxpayers need services immediately, therefore, those who respond must be required to live within the city where response can be only moments rather than a half hour or more, right?     There is no need to ANY OPTIONS.   No need for any long drawn out discussions.    It's all mere common sense, police MUST live WITHIN the city they serve, and must pay the same taxes as the homeowners who pay their salaries and benefits.

Enforce the residency rule - it's that simple

But these vechiles are not earmarked for the cops that need to respond with lights flashing and sirens blaring...they are earmarked as vehicles for the evidence techs....you know, CSI people.  On TV they all have Tahoes and Escalades, so SPD wants to have the same for their evidence techs.  And to your point, even though these techs DO NOT need to get to the crime scene within minutes......if in fact they did, then living 45mins away from the city it makes no difference what they drive, now does it!!!! And for an assistant chief or the chief to think the public is so stupid that he can justify these vehicles versus others...well he doesn't hold the people in too high regard...kinda like DVOR!

Tahoe critics on city council show good sense

Re Jan. 19 article, “New SUVs for commuting cops stalled with impasse in council”: Thank God for Schenectady City Council members Vince Riggi, Barbara Blanchard and Carl Erikson.
Their refusal to buy the three [Chevy] Tahoes requested by the police department shows that at least three people in local government have a clue as to the economic conditions this city is facing.
And to reiterate what Mr. Riggi said about the police: They should live in the city! The ones mentioned don’t even live in the county.

Maybe Bennett is the nay-boob.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

You know that DVOR would approve the Tahoes if he were a voting member of that group.....

Looks like a nice job.  Can someone verify if they are guaranteed 4 hours overtime anytime they work overtime?  How many hours would he have had to work to make that much overtime pay?

This guy made some good pay the last 3 years.  2010 was a wrough year!

2009 $137,076
2010 $106,569
2011 $142,479

SCHENECTADY — A crime scene police investigator more than doubled his salary last year to become the city's highest-paid employee on a list dominated by police, according to records obtained by the Times Union.

All but one of the top 28 municipal earners in 2011 were city cops, with Investigator John Ericson, who serves as an evidence technician, topping the list, according to the figures released under a state Freedom of Information request.

His base salary last year was $66,345, but overtime boosted his pay to $149,428.

In regards to officers taking the vehicles home.

How about the wear and tear on a vehicle?  More miles, more maintenance, more cost.

How about the trade in value on a high mileage vehicle?

How about having to replace them sooner?

I am sure an OT situation is a contract thing guaranteeing a set number of hours but is each hour after that paid on a hourly basis?  Ifso then the travel time should be calculated in to reduce it.

Who is paying for the extra gas?

Really?   "Wonderful"

Hamburg, can you please tell us about the cops DWI, the drug dealing, the working at a second job while on the city clock.

Hamburg, how about the cop who was ON THE CITY CLOCK - i.e., the taxpayers were paying him while he was watching his son bowl.

How about the cop that was not charging time to go to a doctor's appt

How about the cop who was ON THE TAXPAYERS WATCH and going to sleep for several hours?

How about John Lewis----is he wonderful?????    Is he Hamburg?????    Come on hamburg, answer that one!!!!!!!!

And Hamburg, tell us, is it appropriate that the taxpayers must pay for the most expensive vehicles so that the cops can drive them home IN NON-EMERGENCY situations?

And hamburg, is it acceptable for the police to live so far away from the city AND be allowed to use expensive taxpayer-paid vehicles to travel home with?

Is it acceptable that the taxpayers are FORCED to pay for all the wear and tear and the gas for expensive cop vehicles that are driven FOR PLEASURE.

Hamburg, the taxpayers household income is typically $30,000 a year --- do YOU believe that cops who make $150,000 a year should be exempt from having to pay for their OWN PERSONAL vehicles (vehicle cost plus gas, maintenance, insurnace, etc) when taking their pleasure travel to and from work??????    Well???????

I am not obligated to respond to ANYTHING you say..   You are a noted and worthless hermaphrodite EARTHWORM who is constantly attempting to send our lovely County back to the DARK AGE..  I wait for the day that you are rounded up and imprisoned for life and can only HOPE our elected officials realize the urgency in getting rid of your ilk.  I DO know our men and women in uniform are anxious to do so -- we only await our fair Governor's hand to drop -- thus sending the signal to cut off your heads for the good of societal improvement....

Lost in a lot of the foolishness on this thread is the fact that the City Council did an effective job of fiscal oversight.  They saved the taxpayers and the Dept. money.

Like the recent fiscal oversight....however this little amount of money saved is very small compared to the raises here and there, the OT, the pension padding, the failure to disipline the city employees when necessary.......

Cant wait to see the 2011 final Financials and see how bad the estimates were.  Then when the bond ratings come out next.  The cupboards are bare and the hinges are coming off.

First off don't you ever write a reply to me in the manner in which you have ever again. This is not warranted. What you suggest is a nasty thing to say.  I don't use that tone, nor make such inappropriate sexually orientated statements directed at anyone  I am a respected member of our community and should be treated as such.

Yes I will admit I did poke fun of you on the snowflake thread, called you a flake but gosh you have got to learn to roll with the punches or boy are you gonna have ulcers or heaven forbid the big one.

Oh what I say in private messages it is my right to bust on you all I want no different than any other private conversation that can said off the boards.

I never said anything in my public post about not supporting our police. I stand behind them 100%. They have a dangerous, thankless job.

There is nothing wrong with questioning an expenditure.  I would rather have people ask questions then sit on their backsides apathetic to the concerns of this city.

I did gather information from a reliable source using those same questions I posted.  I will share their response a litter later.

By the way they responded to my questions in a most professional manner and was not in the least bit insulted by my asking them.
