There are some points here, which should be universal.

Underage drinking and drug use are illegal.

Underage sex with a minor is also illegal.

Why isn't this being taught and I'm not taking this from a 'religious' standpoint, but from reality. Having sex with a minor  - you can be a convicted sex offender. LETS TEACH THAT!!!

who gets to draw that line?......what is underage with a minor.....???? there's a 2 year difference between my and my sig-other....todays agenda would make one of us a criminal...pathetic....

I turned 17 they changed the drinking age to 21.....zippity-do-dah....for what?

drug use illegal....HAHAHA....I NEVER SAW SO MANY 'LEGAL' MIND ALTERING DRUG COMMERCIALS IN MY LIFE.....HOW F'EN PATHETIC.....

abstinence CAN be an option as WELL as the proper noun/verb use......and they need to KEEP IT SIMPLE AND MECHANICAL....the schools are not responsible for the mental health of our
children---THAT is a line we should never never never cross.......

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

STOP BEING GOOD DEMOCRATS---STOP BEING GOOD REPUBLICANS--START BEING GOOD AMERICANS

She noted that schools already teach and expect children to stay away from drugs and alcohol for their own health and should employ the same tools when teaching about sex, since the disease risks can affect the rest of their lives.
“Why are we so cynical? Why do we think they can’t make that choice?” she said of maintaining abstinence.

Sex education WON'T and DOESN'T work!!! Just like teaching kids that drugs and alcohol are bad for your health. Drugs and alcohol are rampant in schools!!! Heroin is HUGE!!!!! Dimwits!! More wasting of taxpayer's $$$ on 'programs to nowhere'!

But hell.......PP can't still rake in the buck for abortions and the government can create tax paid rehab facilities!! YUP....those government programs are sure working folks!

HPV study finds 7% of U.S. teens, adults carry virus in mouths
Infection with human papillomavirus heightens the risk of developing cancer of the mouth and throat. The findings indicate that most cases of oral HPV can be traced to oral sex, rather than to kissing or casual contact.

A new study showing an estimated 7% of American teens and adults carry the human papillomavirus in their mouths may help health experts finally understand why rates of mouth and throat cancer have been climbing for nearly 25 years. The evidence makes it clear that oral sex practices play a key role in transmission.

The new data, published online Thursday by the Journal of the American Medical Assn., are the first to assess the prevalence of oral HPV infection in the U.S. population. The findings indicate that the virus is not likely to spread through kissing or casual contact and that most cases of oral HPV can be traced to oral sex, which many Americans mistakenly view as a safe practice.

"There is a strong association for sexual behavior, and that has important implications for public health officials who teach sexual education," said Dr. Maura L. Gillison of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, who led the study and presented the findings Thursday at a meeting of head and neck cancer researchers and doctors in Phoenix.

Though herpes, HIV and other diseases can be transmitted via oral sex, the practice is often considered a safer alternative to sexual intercourse. A survey released last year by theU.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about 90% of adults have had oral sex, along with 27% of 15-year-old boys and 23% of 15-year-old girls.

"I don't think people think of oral sex in the same way they do with traditional intercourse," said Fred Wyand, director of the HPV Resource Center at the American Social Health Assn. in Research Triangle Park, N.C. "Sometimes younger people engage in oral sex so they don't have to worry about pregnancy. They may not even make the link between oral sex and STDs."................................>>>>....................>>>>....................http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-oral-hpv-20120127,0,1665761.story

Sex ed does work. The facts are the facts.

Your tin hat fear of PP is dumb. The sky is not falling because of PP. The only reason you, and that backwards church group, hate them is because they provide abortions. All of the other good they do doesn't matter to haters like you because of one single service they provide. Dumb. That Shilfer woman's first reaction was simply because "PP" was teaching. "What" they were saying didn't matter at the time.

Skittish about sex ed? Opting out is easy

The Shenendehowa parents who last fall bullied the administration into severing its longstanding relationship with
Planned Parenthood over its guest lectures on human sexuality, are now pressing for an abstinence-only approach
to sex ed that all but guarantees the district’s pregnancy rate — currently about half the upstate average — will
begin rising. Is that what these parents want?

A sex ed curriculum that ignores a basic fact of life — that teens will engage in sex despite the best efforts of
adults to discourage them — is doomed to failure. That’s not to say parents, educators and guest lecturers on
the subject shouldn't try to sell kids on the merits of abstinence — and even the Planned Parenthood
representatives who spoke at Shen always did. Just that they’re not really doing their job if they don’t tell
them what they need to know to protect themselves — not just from unwanted pregnancy but communicable
diseases — if they do have sex.

Schools need to make sure their “opt-out” instructions to parents are clear and comprehensive, and that parents
receive them. Sending them home with students or handing them out at back-to-school night isn’t enough; they
need to be mailed.
That way, parents who want to undertake the task of sex ed at home, or prevent their kids from learning about sex until they’re older, can do so. And schools can teach the remaining kids responsibly, giving them the full story.

What a little snide comment...The writer assumes that if parents choose to teach their children about sex, they won't be getting the "full story".  What a crock of sh*t.  If the parent doesn't break out the banana and condom, they aren't getting the "full story".  If they aren't talking about the option of "outer course", they aren't getting the "full story".

The only bullies are the psycho left who are infatuated with other children's sexual behavior.  These teen sex zealots should be put on a sex register.  It is a little disturbing that these sex fanatics feel they need to push their sex curriculum onto the public school student.  If these people want to discuss the art of outer course with their kids that is up to them but keep it out of the public classroom.

Hopefully the Shen School District will return to a responsible sex ed course and not let these bullies push their bigoted
religious agenda on the rest of society.

Hopefully parents will wake up and stop letting the public schools push their sexual values onto their children and get the schools back to teaching academics and out of personal sexual behavior.  Don't let the bullies in public education intimidate you.  Stand up to the coercive powers of the state, and don’t let them indoctrinate your children about such a personal and important subject.

There is nothing "accidental" about procreation.  We've been doing it since the beginning of time.  To think we've been convinced that we need government bureaucrats or an organization like Planned Parenthood to teach an instinctual behavior show how far we have fallen - or how gullible we have become.

Nobody is preventing these children from going to Planned Parenthood to learn about their ovaries.  If the parent is inadequate and can't teach the "full story" about sex, then they can go to Planned Parenthood.  The Catholic Church or anybody is for that matter is stopping them.

Why don't you organize a bus trip to Planned Parenthood for the 'Parents of the Capital District'?  Show you really give a sh*t about teen sexual behavior and organize and advocate the cause for Planned Parenthood without using the force of government.

Let parents, teachers guide kids on sex, not Planned Parenthood

I found your Jan. 30 editorial [“Skittish about sex ed? Opting out is easy”] regarding sex education to be disrespectful toward concerned parents who want to work with school districts to improve the sex education curriculum.
Your characterization of parents as “skittish” and bullying was also disrespectful and dismissive of their viewpoint.
Why should parents not have a say in how their children are taught on this very important and personal topic? And why should an abortion-providing business be allowed to infl uence our children’s attitudes toward sexuality while getting free advertising for their services?
Your statement that “teens will engage in sex despite the best efforts of adults to discourage them” is not universally true. In my view, it is the height of irresponsibility to not encourage our children to avoid all life-threatening behaviors, and actions that can lead to extremely adverse consequences, both physically and emotionally. To give in to the “kids will be kids and have sex” argument is to abdicate our role as responsible adults who have an obligation to teach and admonish our children to abstain from dangerous activities, and activities that many of us believe God intends to be saved for marriage.
Why not ask our children to hold themselves to a higher standard than our promiscuous culture promulgates? Don’t we want to challenge and encourage them to be adults who strive for higher standards in this as well as other aspects of life, such as grades and ethics? It’s not about being skittish, but rather about placing a higher value on life and sexuality.
Why do I believe Planned Parenthood should not be allowed to teach this course? They provide well over 300,000 abortions per year at their clinics, for which they make about $1,000 apiece. This equates to a large percentage of their annual budget of $1.2 billion.
Comprehensive sex education is necessary, in my view, but why can’t our paid teachers teach the curriculum designed by the district with input from parents, rather than allow Planned Parenthood to subtly promote their agenda, which is inherently harmful to our children? If you want more information, read Catherine Anthony Adair’s Nov. 23 article [“Former Planned Parenthood Worker: It Only Cares About Abortion”] in the Washington Examiner, where she discusses her experience working for Planned Parenthood. You will come to learn, as I have, that they are not what they appear to be.
