Planned Parenthood's sex education lectures belong back at Shen

"It’s not news that the Catholic Church has trouble with Planned Parenthood. That’s because it performs abortions and
speaks frankly about sexuality and the issues surrounding it. These are things that older middle-school and high-school
students, many of whom are sexually active, need to hear."

"And they’ve been hearing them from Planned Parenthood’s educators, who give guest lectures to about 100 classes
a year. They don’t encourage sexual activity — in fact, they encourage abstinence — but they do talk about the risks,
including unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, of having unprotected sex."

"Indeed, the program seems to have been working. Shenendehowa’s average pregnancy rate for 15- to 19-year-olds
between 2006 and 2008 was 22.2 per 1,000, about half the upstate average, and better than the average for any
other state."

Wouldn't attribute the lower pregnancy rates simply due to a Planned Parenthood program.

What can we say about Schenectady which has the same program and one of the highest pregnancy rates in the State (State rate of 54.2).

NYS Dept of Health 2009

There were 165 abortions in Schenectady County (57.9) and 135 births for girls ages 15 - 19.

There were 86 abortions in Saratoga County (26.6) and 105 births for girls ages 15 -19.

There is WAY more involved than simply a PP program determining the rates here and personally, if this PP leaves, I doubt the rate will change as well.

And some bible beating, do gooders are working as hard as they can to change that success.

Once again... if you are a Shen parent who doesn't want your child to get PP classes, just opt out.

Unfortunately, The Religious Right Fanatics have made sure that all kids are now FORCED TO OPT OUT of
PP Classes.

The will of a few zealots is being forced on the children of the entire school.

A baby picture of DVR provided to students might work better than Planned Parenthood.

I have to place the blame on PP for one mistake they made in this dilemma. They published and distributed information which was not based upon facts from medicine or science. The published and distributed two 'definitions' of abstinence which were false and misleading.

They have created confusion in relation to the definition of abstinence for which parents (religious or not) have the right to question.

As a society, we already battle over when life begins and now PP has created ANOTHER battle over what abstinence truly is.

They've dug their own hole and they need to correct it.

I have yet to read any reputable account of what the 'actual' complaints of the parents, or the actual lesson taught in
the classroom.
Lots of rumor, lots of supposition,  but very little facts.
If a History instructor taught a mistaken fact of history... Do we throw History out of the classroom?  (Rachel might)
If a English teacher makes a mistake in pronouncing a word... Do we fire the teacher and rid the school of English?

If mistake were made in a very successful (FREE) class, then correct the mistake.

We all know this has nothing to do with content and everything to do with Christian Right Wing Agenda.  These few
zealots are forcing their will on the entire school.
It's being labeled "The Shenendehowa Inquisition" by the kids.  Hopefully, the drive to restrict information will be
reversed and the Religious Fanatics pushed to their rightful place in this school... 'they can serve as a bad example'.

You've swung right on over to the 'nut job' portion of your own pendulum.

The only facts that were disputed were the multiple definitions of abstinence and showing how a condom goes on in a middle school setting. The issue I'm arguing is the erroneous PP definitions of abstinenece.

If my son's history teacher stated that he knows people that think the holocoust was made up..I'd have his keyster fired.

If my son's science teacher stated that he knows that some people believe that white people are smarter than all other races ...I'd have him lose his job too.

They are not stating facts...just crazy, misleading ideas of what other people 'think' and this is what PP did too. It's totally wrong, it needs correction and it's misleading children.

Have them fix the mistake it's just that simple....

I have tried to explain this to you several times.  You refuse to hear it.

I'll use your example:
A history teacher states...
~ "Some people think that the Holocaust was made up"...
~ "Some people think that the Holocaust really happened, but only a few thousand people were killed"...
~ "We don't agree with those views... we know that the Holocaust happened and millions were killed."
Got it?

Now the same type of explanation taken from PP:

What Is Abstinence?
You may have heard people talk about abstinence in different ways.
~ "Some people think of abstinence as not having vaginal intercourse. They may enjoy other kinds of sex play that
don't lead to pregnancy. This is better described as outercourse."
~ "Some people define abstinence as not having vaginal intercourse when a woman might get pregnant. This is
better described as periodic abstinence, which is one of the fertility awareness-based methods of birth control."
~ "Some people define abstinence as not having any kind of sex play with a partner. This is the definition we use on
these pages.
Being continuously abstinent is the only way to be absolutely sure that you won't have an unintended pregnancy
or get a sexually transmitted disease (STD)."

Some people use abortion as a form of birth control, but I wouldn't want PP stating that to my middle schooler.

This three-time quoted definition above...and please read this carefully....is confusing and misleading.

PP does NOT need to state anything about 'outercourse' or 'periodic abstinence' as neither of them have anything to do with what true abstinence is. We now know that outercourse was defined in the 1970's as means of 'birth control' and is far removed from abstinence.

These are made up terms and should not be used simply because they do NOTHING to educate! What does a child learn from the terms outercourse or periodic abstinence?! Tell me?

What do you believe the significance is? PP doesn't say they are wrong or misleading? So Box, what is the purpose of teaching these terms. Enlighten me.

It must be confusing to you but it's certainly not to me.

PP states it this way because many of the kids DO see abstinence this way.  I don't, but THEY DO AND THE CLASS ISN'T
WORDED FOR YOU OR ME... IT'S WORDED FOR THEM.

Enlightening you seems to be impossible... but I try:
If you were presenting this class for adults, you would probably use terms that those adults use.  If Outercourse, were
a term regularly used and understood by adults, then it would be acceptable in that class.

Most American adults would view oral sex as sex.  But (as posted above) many kids today don't see it that way.
If you and I were taking this class that concept would seem ridiculous to us, but that's not true with many kids who
have different views on sex.

PP offers accurate reliable true information about sex.  It presents it in a way that kids can understand using their
own language and teaches kids that some of their preconceived ideas are not accurate.

Would you prefer the class were taught to agree with YOUR terms, or YOUR choice of words, or in an accurate
format that kids will understand and believe?

OPT IN if you want it - and go pay for it, tax dollars paid for PP's "Education Centers", go use it and pay for the service.

MT, the service is FREE.  It costs the School District Nothing!  It saves the School District the price of an instructor if
they were to provide that service in house, and for many kids, PP is the only reliable source of information on the
subject.

It's not a matter of being FREE or not - if you want it - go to their center ... there's no place for it in ANY school.  Opt IN ... don't force me to "opt OUT".

It's MT's way or the Highway.  He doesn't approve so no one can take part in a very necessary class.
I wonder if MT will accept responsibility for the added number of Shen girls who, wanted this class, yet MT opted her
out of the class.
I wonder how much of MT's tax dollars will go to support this girl when she is preg and on welfare.  No high school
diploma, no college, just minimum wages for the rest of her life... but that's ok with MT... HE had it his way.

How selfish!
