Is time money? It is for schools
Grants hang in balance as districts tussle with state over deadline

ALBANY — With millions of dollars for some of the region's poorest children hanging in the balance, the state Education Department and the Albany and Schenectady school districts have differing accounts about a missed deadline.

Districts across the state that qualify for federal School Improvement Grants were required to submit plans for a new teacher evaluation system by the end of last week. On Monday, department spokesman Dennis Tompkins said Albany schools were one of five districts in the state, including New York City, that did not file the necessary paperwork.

But Albany schools superintendent Ray Colucciello said a district official hand-delivered the necessary materials on Thursday afternoon, more than 48 hours before the deadline. Colucciello said he did not understand how state officials could claim otherwise.

This is the best situation for the students in the Schenectady school district. FINALLY, the State has had enough. The Unions in the district are running the system...and running it solely for their own gains...not for the academic welfare of the students.

This is proof that the failed attempts of improving the City schools need to be put into the hands of those other than the current school leaders.

Thank you Governor, maybe our school children have a shot now.
