For my first visit to the Trustco Bank on State and Brandywine I was taken back by all the bullet proof glass between me and the bank clerk. Then I thought about the SEFU on Albany St. and realized it has the workers totally separated by bullet proof glass too. Today I had to visit Trustco again and was shocked to see a sign on the entrance door that is Schenectady in a nutshell. It says to remove anything that covers or surrounds your head ie baseball caps, hoods.
I have never ever in my life seen a sign such as this before but then again I have never lived in such a crime riddled city like this before. It is getting so that no matter what street or what neighborhood I travel in...lock the doors, be ready to duck or floor it.
Then I go to Rite Aid across the street. My first impression...what a dump. I have never have seen a Rite Aid like this one. Then I go to have a prescription filled. Another fortress. Everything closed in, the pharmacists behind a full wall of glass, a locking door the only way to enter into their area. Now look at Rite Aid on Eastern Parkway, bright, cheery, open, friendly.
One day while out walking I needed to find a restroom. At the Stewarts on Nott Terrace I was refused. The hotel and motels refused me also. Needless to say it was one heck of a walk home up that Eastern Ave hill. Again, never in my travels in this part of the state have I ever found Stewarts to not have their restroom available to the public. When cruising with my motorcycle buddies we always used Stewarts as a nice rest stop.
Downtown definitely has a facilities problem. Where are visitors, if they exist, supposed to go? Stewart's I believe is not supposed to refuse use of the facilities. One of the reasons I patronize them is because I find that amenity handy. The signs in the bank are silly. If I'm going in to commit an armed robbery, they think a sign warning me that they will refuse me service for covering my head will stop me? You can't have a renaissance surrounded by a high crime poverty dump. You have to clean up the urban problems first. This is a well known fact of life that our officials don't want to acknowledge.
If the bank is unsafe you need a security guard, no way around it. What about a toupee? Maybe a disguise is just someone's idea of fashion? This is what everyday life is like in high crime areas. Get used to it, coming soon to a street near you.

In general, Stewart's has been slipping IMHO --- at one time their customer service, shop cleanliness and quality of products was extremely consistent no matter which shop you went into. In the past year or so, I have discovered that their customer service is extremely inconsistent --- and the same for quality of their product. We will drive to the Stewart's at Mariaville Road and Burdeck Street or the one on Hamburg Street rather than patronize either the one at Curry and Helderberg or the one on Broadway.
This is even true of the Stewart's outside the Schenectady area. One of the nicer ones is located on Route 9W in near Ravena -- but you want to avoid the other Stewart's in that area.

Stewarts are now so inconsistent and boy are the clerks at Knott Street unfriendly. Most stores the clerks are friendly. Maybe it is because of the clientele who knows, that cold NYC attitude.
They never give you the register receipts either. Many times I buy things for friends that can't get out and are in between shopping days. I have to ask for it and they act like it is killing them. Oh, there was a clerk there recently that I think may be temp from another store. Never saw them before, they put the cash receipt in the bag and that night I was picking up somethingfor a friend milk and bread etc.
One night they had a sign up saying they needed ones and fives. I had some, so living nearby I went home and got them. Gosh, I got a very curt thank you, not even a small smile, she exchanged the money then she turned and walked away. Left a sour taste in my mouth for sure!!
I came across a really nice one on Rt 2 just before you cross the Hudson. It was the Monday after Thanksgiving and I think the clerk knew I was not a regular he asked me how my Thanksgiving went and the store was immaculate.

Hey Scotsdog08, grab your clipboard, we are going to grade the last few Stewart shops in the state. I'll count the bathrooms and you prepare the hotdogs, then we can go make out again. Mommy said it was okay as long as I brought her a banana split.
