Actually - that is one of the biggest problems with property taxes EVERYWHERE -- it has a built in disincentive to improve the property  AND it puts an unfair burden on persons or businesses or in rural areas - farms - that have low incomes but more highly valued properties.

You know NOTHING about property taxes as you do not now, nor ever, have owned property.

Heck, DV, why don't we do away with property tax, have it all under income tax.   Let's do away with sales tax too.  Just have it by income tax.   Hey, why bother with state income tax, let's only have one tax, via the federal government.     Much easier way to hide how the money is spent.

What a fruit cake.

DV, how about CUTTING SPENDING??????????      How about if yoru buddy dems make the rich and politically connected downtown PAY THEIR OWN TAXES!!!!!!!!!    How about that one DV?????    If they paid their own taxes, the taxes on the homeonwers would go down!   DUH!!!!!!!!!

And about eliminating all these tens, perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars on downtown, that would SUBSTANTIALLY reduce cost for residents.    MAKE THOSE DOWNTOWN PEOPLE PAY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKET !!!!!!!!!!

And YOU claim property taxes are problem "EVERWHERE" as you YELL.   Gee. please explain why houses OUTSIDE Schenectady sell AND their taxes are lower.

Explain DV, explain WHY taxes in Schenectady are OH SO MUCH HIGHER than anywhere else????????     Dingbat, it's because YOUR DEMS are making the homeonwers in the city of Schenectady pay for the property taxes of the millionaires downtown !!!!!!!!!!!!    And THAT is the  UNDISPUTABLE TRUTH, THE WHOLE TRUTH, AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH!!!!!!

Tell us WHY, DV, WHY are the all the downtown property projects under your buddy dems, mostly 100% exempt from property & school taxes and mostly with no end date?   Why DV?????    Why??????    Obviously when I have great grandchildren, if they live in Schenectady, they will STILL be paying the property and school taxes of those properties downtown.

And WHY do the people in the neighborhoods get for paying for their own taxes PLUS the taxes of the millionaires?????    Huh?    Tell us DV

I have to give you all yet another link, proving once again people DO NOT WANT TO LIVE IN SCHENECTADY.   A friend of ours was cleaning stuff of his comptuer and found this story.   Notice, this is two years ago.

This is a story about how the dems are BIG TIME RUINING the neighborhoods.    Notice that the Mr Barber in the story stated he put his house up for sale.  Despite how he indicated he meticulously fixed it up, IT STILL HAS NOT SOLD AFTER A WHOPPING TWO YEARS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHOO WHOO.    DV, tell us why houses OUTSIDE Schenectady ARE selling but a beautiful houses in the city do NOT sell?????????    Huh???????   why not?????    Oh speechless time again.

That is why I support ENDING the local property tax as the primary source for school funding and using the STATE INCOME TAX to fund 100% of the basic mandatory cost of public education.

Taken from page 1 of the DEM scapegoat manual. I've heard Karen Johnson say this on many occasions...it's not the property taxes...it's the SCHOOLS. Well, if we're so worried about the schools, have McCarthy man up and do something about it. NYC Mayors do it all the time...but that would mean McCarthy would have to earn the salary and pension benefits he's collecting.

Pathetic that Vince Riggi is the first Council member actually questioning how the City is spending our money....the first person in decades. That's the main problem, not the schools...

MAKE THOSE DOWNTOWN PEOPLE PAY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKET !!!!!!!!!!

If the 'real' truth was to be known.....the businesses downtown are barely making it....REALLY!!! And it is 'really' true that if they were forced to pay 100% of their assessed taxes and taken out of the Empire Zone program...they would be gone because they can't afford it!!

How do I know this? Because we are friends with folks who own businesses downtown. Don't tell anybody....but some of these businesses have been up for sale for almost TWO years and ...... no buyers!!! Some of these businesses are ready to take a loss (no profit) and walk away just like the home owners are doing. So even tho most businesses downtown are tax exempt, plus was propped up with taxpayer $$$$.......they too are not making it and struggling.

So now, in comparison, we can just imagine how much more the homeowners are suffering!!

You'll never read about these truths from the local media. But the truth is.......the METROPLEX/GILLEN is an epic failure and will collapse....... taking with it the city...if not the entire county to a historic decline!

It will take decades to repair the fiscal damage the METORPLEX/GILLEN has done on Schenectady County!

The property tax is the most regressive of all taxes and while it made sense in an AGRARIAN society ,,, it does NOT make sense in the 21st century.   There are many folks -- across party lines and ideological lines that see the wisdom in ENDING the property tax.    Ending the public school property tax is the FIRST STEP in the right direction.

A simple 1 rate for all flat income tax without any exemptions or write offs or loopholes is the BEST would be an extremely fair tax.  A lot easier for people to keep records and fill out tax forms.

Of course, the nayboobs don't want a simple 1 rate for all flat tax because then they couldn't hide the millions that they have robbed for the working poor and the middle class.

By the looks of you, you appear to be the owner of the biggest Ahole in the county.

That is shocking since there is a condo/apt building going up on Union Street. We were under the impression that these tax paid METROPLEX/GILLEN developments were suppose to increase business, hence increase the tax base to lower taxes.......not watch businesses flee........yes?

Businesses are not sold UNLESS they are not making a profit.
And businesses are only bought if they have a history of being successful and making a profit.

Smart entrepreneurs sell businesses while they are cash cows, before they crash of said cow.

I doubt that is what is happening here though - I just am skeptical that business could be rolling in dough.

First of all -- we are talking about different ends of Union Street

Second -- the condominium project isn't even completed yet -- they are just finishing the demolition of existing buildings ----  so tell us how an UNFINISHED project  more than 2 miles away supposedly had any impact on the other business ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

You nimrods are grasping at straws.

The 2 block miracle mile of state street was suppose to revitalize and benefit the entire city/county over a decade ago. How is that working out?????     (Murders, pitbulls, robberies, gangs, rapes, guns, drug dealers/addicts, not to forget the highest taxes in the state)

You just proved my point....
