New York (CNN) -- Authorities have arrested a man they claim was plotting to detonate pipe bombs in and around New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday night.

The intended targets of Jose Pimentel, 27, were U.S. military personnel who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as U.S. postal facilities and police stations, according to Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The suspect was described by Bloomberg as an "al Qaeda sympathizer," though he is not believed to have ever made direct contact with anyone in the organization.







Bloomberg announces terror arrest
"There is no evidence he worked with anyone else," Bloomberg said. "He appears to be ... a lone wolf."

He was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in an apartment in Washington Heights, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan, as he began to drill holes in the would-be pipe bomb, Kelly said. While authorities had monitored him for over two years, they decided to move quickly for fear that device may soon explode, according to the commissioner.

The suspect allegedly learned how to make a pipe bomb after reading Inspire, the al Qaeda terrorist network's English-language online propaganda, recruiting and training magazine.

"He was a reader of al Qaeda's slick online magazine Inspire -- and inspire him it did," Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said. "His stated desire to attack our servicemen and women ... could have come from an al Qaada playbook."

NEW YORK –  An "Al Qaeda sympathizer" who plotted to bomb police and post offices in New York City as well as U.S. troops returning home has been arrested on numerous terrorism-related charges, city officials said Sunday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced at a news conference the Saturday arrest of Jose Pimentel of Manhattan, "a 27-year-old Al Qaeda sympathizer" who the mayor said was motivated by terrorist propaganda and resentment of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The mayor said Pimentel, a U.S. citizen originally from the Dominican Republic, was "plotting to bomb police patrol cars and also postal facilities as well as targeted members of our armed services returning from abroad."
The FBI was briefed on the matter, but declined involvement, an FBI official told FoxNews.com.
Authorities have no evidence that Pimentel was working with anyone else, the mayor added.
"He appears to be a total lone wolf," the mayor said. "He was not part of a larger conspiracy emanating from abroad."
Instead, Bloomberg said, Pimentel represents the type of threat FBI Director Robert Mueller has warned about as U.S. forces erode the ability of terrorists to carry out large scale attacks.
Pimentel, also known as Muhammad Yusuf, is accused of having an explosive substance Saturday when he was arrested that he planned to use against others and property to terrorize the public.
The charges accuse him of conspiracy going back at least to October 2010, and include first-degree criminal possession of a weapon as a crime of terrorism, and soliciting support for a terrorist act. He was to be arraigned later Sunday.
"This is just another example of New York City because we are an iconic city ... this is a city that people would want to take away our freedoms gravitate to and focus on," Bloomberg said.
The New York Police Department's Intelligence Division was involved in the arrest. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Pimentel spent most of his years in Manhattan and lived about five years in Schenectady.

Pat Zollinger's latest post proves once again why she is unfit to ever hold office in Schenectady.  She and the other nayboobs hate Schenectady .... and people who hate the community in which they live should NEVER be entrusted with public office.

Actually, the only people who have a problem with Pat Zollinger are those who live in and create the darkness and want to keep the public from knowing the actual truth.  If we had to point to one of your posts that shows why you and those that you agree with that you and those should never hold office, we could probably look at just about ANY of the posts that you put on here.  And if you love the City of Schenectady (not the dreamed-up City-County farce that you previously stated would be created), why don't you actually move there and deal with the issues, such as those that Ms. Zollinger does on a daily / weekly / monthly / yearly basis?  You don't see her running away from the city just because of all the issues, she actually tries to make changes.

If anything, she doesn't hate the community in which she lives, what she hates is what is happening in it, and the fact that those in control will do nothing to clean up the mess, pretty much because they are the CAUSE of the mess.
