SCHENECTADY Police getting 20 more Tasers City to train all officers in use of stun gun BY STEVEN COOK Gazette Reporter
City police will nearly double their available Tasers in the coming months, Chief Mark Chaires said Thursday, with about 20 more of the devices added to the current 25. Officers not already trained in their use will take an eight-hour course, Chaires said. The devices will then be available for officers at the station as they go out for patrol. The Tasers won’t be assigned to individual offi cers. “If the situation arises, they’ll be readily available and they wouldn’t have to wait,” Chaires said. The extra Tasers are expected to cost about $37,000, Chaires said. Drug seizure money is expected to help cover the costs, offi cials said. The models Schenectady uses include cameras that start recording when the weapon is fi red. The training would then come as time and funds allow. As many as 75 more members would be trained on the devices, meaning there could be overtime involved. The department has had the devices available since April, but not all officers are trained to use them. ......................>>>>...............>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01103&AppName=1
Guess it takes a man being shot at the Gazetto to get the police the equipment they are in dire need for. What a pathetic way for the City to operate and the Council should be ashamed!
What is it going to take for the City Council to take a stand on the pit bull danger? A child needs to be mauled to death?? A woman has already been hospitalized and nothing has been done?
The current council has proven time and time again that they are ineffective at creating any positive changes within our City.
The training would then come as time and funds allow.

We will need the 20 new tasers just to keep the ruffian Nayboobs in line.

The current 'leaders' are completely incompetent and this taser issue is proof positive. Instead of being a proactive City which has proper equipment for their police force, it's a reactive system where only AFTER a crisis occurs, the City somehow 'find funds'...well, not for training.
Schenectady is not a well run City. There is crisis after crisis and no one seems to have solutions on how to handle the fallout! Worse yet, the City has not taken any proactive approach to the graffiti, pit bulls or violence in the City....it just keeps getting worse.
This isnt one cart before the horse it is 2 carts before the horse. Lets give them a taser before training and then buy the ones with the cameras so that when they use the taser wrong, the plaintiff can then use the video against the city to prove that they were tasered inappropriately. IDIOTS.

Have the police actually ever written a littering ticket, a noise ticket or arrested someone for graffiti in the past few years. No one is scared to throw their garbag Half the litter on the streets is from the garbage crews. They take the can, dump it out and then either throw it onto the lae in the streets. wn or driveway or they take them and slam them upside down on the street leaving anything that was left inside all over. For these reasons, I'm also not into neighborhood clean-ups.

Uh, many of us are outside of the city.
Secondly, it is NOT, and I repeat NOT the job of the taxpayers to perform the services that they pay taxes for. Taxes are supposed to be used to provide NECESSARY services to the RESIDENTS, and NOT, I repeat NOT create socialist businesses and NOT exempt millioniares from paying taxes.
And you MUST agree that NONE of the stuff downtown has helped the neighborhoods. House values are plummeting, taxes are rising, NECESSARY city services are disappearing, neighborhoods are getting worse, and more money is poured into downtown, more tax exemptions for the political cronies, STILL people have to leave the city to shop, and all this causes house values to plummet more, and taxes go up even ore, which means more people are putting their houses up for sale, houses sit for a year unsold, houses getting seized for back taxes, people abandon their homes, neighborhoods look worse and worse, so YOUR buddy dems just steal from the taxpayers to pour MORE money into downtown, and the vicious cycle continues.
Tell us, DV, show us some PROOF of how downtown has helped neighborhoods. Show us how the stealing from the taxpayers has helped lower taxes, show us the proof with the tax BILLS....the tax BILLS, the tax BILLS (NOT the tax LEVY, NOT the tax RATE). Show us proof where stealing from the taxpayers to fix up downtown has resulted in residential property values increasing. Come on, DV, show us what the homeowners have gotten.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
With all of the taxes and fees that the city 'residents' pay....on would think that the city should be in pristine condition instead of being know ask SCUM-nectady.
The city does NOTHING pro-active! They expect the postal workers to handle the pit bull issue and summons 'volunteers' to clean up the parks! They have got to be kidding!!
The city has just about totally abandoned the residents. They are expected and left to clean and police their own neighborhoods when in fact they pay taxes to the government FOR these services!
But hey..........ya always got proctors!

Remember when the sheriff had a program whereby prisoners got to go outside around the city and do extra cleanup jobs? The city employees complained and there went the program. I have to say that after our cops shot that second mentally ill person Bennett should have resigned. Unprepared is only an excuse ONCE. Maybe Hull can do something about our police force. It's not like we don't pay enough for a good one.
The mentally ill subjects were armed with knives, which was an important fact omitted by a poster.
And the trained police OFFICER(S)(plural) were armed with a night stick, pepper spray, body armor, and hand cuffs, and 12 to 14 weeks of training to teach them how to use non lethal force. Problem is, these kids think they're playing Grand Theft Auto and can just hit the reset button.
Why argue with a political officer who has been assigned to come here to harass anyone who is discussing or dissenting against the dictatorship. There are many, many political officers now where there used to be just "police officers." It is increasingly like the Soviet Union of Socialist Republics.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
You don't try and disarm a knife wielding suspect in close proximity with a night stick. And, if you use pepper spray in an enclosed space it will effect everyone within that closed space. And, it may just enrage the suspect if ineffec tive and make him lash out with the knife. Suspect at Gazette apparently lunged at officers when they went to open door to allow officer in with taser.
