Agreed. Your kids could be just be in their bedroom doing their homework, when a stray bullet finds them. This just in though, there are are better nieghborhoods, and school districts that you could be living in, on the same exact budget, even if you are on section 8.
However, so many people worship the "ghetto culture" which is little more than a celebration a of failure, and they don't want to leave.
Let me qualify my comments. I grew up in the South Bronx, less than a mile away from where several lawyers, doctors, and a supreme court justice grew up. Even Regis Philbin, and Penny Marshall, as well as many other notable people, grew up there. Do you know what we all had in common? WE ALL GOT THE HELL OUT OF THERE!
Per capita, there is a much lower rate of violent crime in the South Bronx, than there is in Schenectady.
Oh, and kids know how to cross a friggin street, without getting hit, because dialing 1-800-Law -1010, is not a viable career path.

My parents did the same in the 1970's after I was born - they moved us up from Downstate (my dad is a Bronx native himself). They moved upstate to get away from the overcrowding and crime. The HUGE difference between then and now: my father FOUND A JOB upstate before we moved. I mean, why move somewhere if there is no work?
The question now is, if the unemployment rate is 9% in Schenectady (in NY State it's 8%) why are people coming here? Is is because the schools are good - no. How about safety of the neighborhoods - no. Are there more jobs here - no.
Or could it be the easier obtained benefits the County is handing out?
A full audit is needed of the social services in Schenectady. Once this is done, I'm sure those indiviudals abusing the system will leave for another area.
The "benefits" that the county provides are STATE MANDATED. It isn't as if Schenectady County has unilaterally decided to provide these "benefits".
Also, your explanation that you are originally from downstate -- helps to explain a lot. You have no real loyalty to this area like those of us whose families have lived here for generations. It is a very easy for downstaters to come up here with their noses in the air and look down on us upstaters. If it is so great downstate -- pack your bags and move back. But if you choose to stay here -- quit your complaining and actually be a part of the solution.

Allege - groundless??? He was caught!!! In GUILDERLAND!!! He was getting away with it for YEARS in Rotterdam by greasing the cops with SWEET contracts. What did you want me to do as a kid, tell the police? THE POLICE KNEW, AND THEY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING.
I have talked to Democrats about Jimmy and why they supported him, and they defend Jimmy by saying he was a "sick man"? Yes...That is what I was told, he was ill. Not a criminal, but sick. And believe me, everybody that went to high school in the 80's and 90' in Rotterdam and still live in Rotterdam KNOW the stories of Jimmy Constantino and they KNOW who the people and political party that ignored and even perpetuated his behavior.
So I don't think I'm being a pompous wind bag since it would be foolish to take my word for it. All people have to do is ask around town. Talk to some Mohon grads from the 80's and 90's. Find out whom the police top brass were, FOIL for the old police contracts negotiated during the Constantino reign and people may just come to the conclusion to WHY our police make more than other area police departments and how the police became so influencial in town and county politics.

That's not looking backward, that is presenting evidence of the character of the people STILL in the Democrat Party TODAY.
Rotterdam can't move the town forward with those same people that acted so self-serving and irresponsible, putting our children at risk just 15 short years ago.
