Martin Luther King was more than just a civil rights advocate... Just as Lincoln was more than the Freer of the Slaves, or Washington was  more than the First Guy to be Elected President.
Why single out King??? Why just King?  Why not un-recognize the white guys too???

I'm not trying to start a spitting match here. I'm just referring to dvr's post where s/he states that he celebrates 'discovery day' because it encompasses all of the folks who also made major discoveries. It got me to thinking

Just like presidents day now encompasses ALL presidents as opposed to one president having it's own separate day.

So I think that changing martin luther king day to 'civil rights day' would also honor ALL.

The public holiday has always split, alternating between Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday... that often fall in the same week...  they alternate to form one Federal holiday.   Washington and Lincoln still  both have a separate honorary  day.

Actually - Presidents Day is always the 3rd Monday in February  -- it doesn't alternate between Lincoln's and Washington's Birthday.   It is mathematically impossible for it to ever fall on February 12 which is Lincoln's Birthday.

When I was a kid, the day was a Federal holiday either for Lincoln or for Washington, and they alternated yearly which was a paid day off and a day off from school.
Later they combined the two and called the Federal holiday 'presidents day'... but they each still have their separate day.

Actually, Washington's  Birthday (February 22) and Lincoln's Birthday (February 12)  and "Presidents Day" have an interesting history.

Washington's Birthday used to always fall during the week-long vacation that New York public schools took in February  (I believe that they still do) ...   and Lincoln's Birthday was a STATE HOLIDAY  (never a federal one) and we used to get that day off from school as well.

Washington's Birthday has been a Federal Holiday since 1880 but until 1971 was only a Federal Holiday for federal employees -- in many states it was also a State Holiday.  In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress and signed into law.   Interestingly, the law did NOT create Presidents Day and did NOT combine Washington's and Lincoln's Birthdays as commonly believed.  The law established that Washington's Birthday be celebrated as a Federal Holiday on the 3rd Monday in February.  The term "Presidents Day" is popular assigned to the holiday but OFFICIALLY the 3rd Monday in February is celebrating Washington's Birthday.

Individual states and municipalities retain the legal prerogative to establish their own OFFICIAL HOLIDAYS -- so for example -- some former president's birthdays are state holidays in their home states.   Also, a day can be a recognized state or municipal holiday but NOT necessarily mean a day off from work or school.

Just as an aside, I believe - but will have to do some more research - that Congressman Sam Stratton was one of the key persons behind the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.  At least that is what I was told at one time.
