I hope that everyone enjoys Discovery Day -- take time to remember the many folks who "discovered" America -----  these include the Clovis people,  St. Brendan, Prince Madoc of Wales, Prince Henry Sinclair, Thorfinn Karlsefni, Leif Erikson, hundreds of fishermen and fisherwomen (names forgotten) from pre-Columbian coastal Europe and Africa , and , of course, -- men like Columbus, Vespuci, Balboa, Cortez, Pizarro, La Salle, Champlain, Hudson et al who came over in the more popularly remembered "age of discovery".

Actually it is Columbus day.

Discovery Day is a provincial holiday in Newfoundland and Labrador and in the Yukon. It replaces the Civic Holiday observed on the first Monday of August in other areas of Canada.

In Newfoundland and Labrador Discovery Day is celebrated on the Monday nearest June 24th in commemoration of the discovery of the province in 1497 by John Cabot. Since 1997, it has also been known as Cabot 500 Day.

In the Yukon it is celebrated on the Monday nearest August 17th (the 3rd Monday in August). It is a statutory holiday in the Yukon.

I choose to celebrate ALL of the people who "discovered" America -- not just one person who arrived years after the first discoverers.

Hawaii, Alaska and South Dakota do NOT recognize Columbus Day at all.  A number of states recognize it - but no longer celebrate it as an official holiday.

Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois, Colorado, Washington, and California recognize Leif Erikson Day on October 9 --- and in many communities in Minnesota and Wisconsin  the observance of Leif Erikson Day is transferred to the 2nd Monday in October and replaces Columbus Day.  The State of Minnesota used to officially refer to the 2nd Monday in October as Discovery Day.

So break out your  Aquavit and raise a toast to those hardy Norse folks who "discovered" America and then break out your best Scotch and raise a toast to bonny Prince Henry Sinclair who "discovered" America and the break out your best Irish whiskey and raise a toast to St. Brendan  -- and raise up a pint of beer to toast Prince Madoc of Wales ---------  and if you are still standing -- offer a peace pipe to celebrate the Native Americans and Clovis people who "discovered" America.

There you go again  with your prejudiced assumptions --- Christmas is still Christmas .. but our family ties in Saint Nicholas Day, Saint Lucy's Day and Nollaig Beag/Twelth Night/Epiphany into our extended family celebration of the Christmas season.

And since Columbus was only one in a long line of people to "discover" America -- it is perfectly fitting to celebrate and honor them all.    Besides that --  we of Scottish and Viking heritage are proud of our ethnic groups' contributions to American history.
