I am disappointed they only shot him 5 times, since that means they fired about 35 shots. The lobby of the Pravda office must look like Swiss Cheese. Of course a tired and screwy man with a knife needs to be shot as many times as possible. When they could use a Taser, they use a gun. When they could use a conversation, they use a Taser. What will they do when they really need the gun, have a Bazooka?

Oh dear, I need not 'second guess' their training. I am only a citizen of the State and have no right to ask if they have a right to kill!

Sounds like a 'suicide by cop.'

Quoted Text
Bennett, at a news conference at police headquarters later, said that when backup arrived with Tasers, Norwood charged at the two initial responders. “One of the officers had to go open the door to let the police officers that had the Tasers inside, and at that point, the remaining officer, who was probably 5 or 6 feet away from the individual, was approached and the subject made running movements at him,” he said.

“He discharged four rounds from his issued firearm, three of which struck the individual.”

Was it 20 times? Usually it "empty the 22 round magazine time" in that general direction. I guess I could be wrong since at five feet they had a 75% hit ratio. Good shooting by modern day cop standards. I am impressed.

Will they need 10 shots at ten feet and 20 shots at 20 feet? Forget 30 feet, I don't want to know.

How about that "suicide by cop" thing? Wrong there, am I?

Did they call in the crisis unit ?  Thats usually the procedure when dealing with someone with a mental illness.

So I guess is the role of the dice if you get the cop trained in taser use or "trained" to use a gun?

At least there will be cameras this time to show all that happened right?

Cops shoot man in paper's office
Police say man threatened them with a knife before he was shot 3 times at Gazette

By DAYELIN ROMAN Staff writer
Updated 09:48 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2011

SCHENECTADY -- A suicidal man is expected to survive after he provoked an officer to shoot him three times in the lobby of The Daily Gazette's main office on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Elvis Norwood, 21, of Hattie Street, first entered the newspaper's building at 2345 Maxon Road Extension around 3 p.m. and asked for a drink of water. A security guard let him in, but police were called after he displayed a 9-inch steak knife just before 4 p.m.

Officers Brett Ferris and Timothy Rizzo responded, but called for backup officers with Tasers because they are not certified to use them.

Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett said only 20 officers in the department are certified to use Tasers.

As Rizzo opened a door to let the Taser-wielding officers in, Norwood ran at Ferris, a four-year veteran of the department, with the knife. Ferris fired four shots, three of which hit Norwood in the arm, chest and abdomen.

Norwood was taken to Ellis Hospital and was later airlifted to Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was in stable condition Saturday night.

Bennett said a family member told police that Norwood had been expressing suicidal thoughts lately, and within the last 10 days he had been taken to Ellis Hospital by the police on a pickup order.

"Everything at this point is causing us to believe that this was an attempt of suicide by the police which, regrettably, happens fairly often," Bennett said.

Bennett said he did not know why Norwood ended up at The Daily Gazette building.

Rizzo and Ferris will be put on administrative leave as a routine matter until they meet with the department's Employee Assistance Program and are cleared to return to duty, he said...............>>>>.................>>>>................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Cops-shoot-man-in-paper-s-office-2209279.php#ixzz1aHzMoirY

Just a quick question here, in the report from the Gazette, the security guard called the Gazettes general manager about this man prior to calling the police.

Is that usual protocol...I'm not a security guard. But, if a man is incoherant, won't leave and is posing a risk, why wouldn't one call the police first and general manager 2nd.

Oh no,,,looks like we have a tough guy cop with a badge and a gun.  Can't question how cops use the force authorized by the citizens on the citizens.  Lesson we should take from this - never bring a knife to a gun fight.  And with the SPD, it's ALWAYS a gun fight.

So is this part of your official capacity as a union officer, or do you come here and harass citizens that pay your 120,000 per anum with full retirement at 40 because you are just a another hotdog with a buzzcut in bodyarmor with select fire weapons?

How sad, because being a Policeman used to command the ultimate respect, now you have so many bad boys and bullies we can't tell any of you apart from rude, disrespectful storm troopers in black SS uniforms. How very sad you have fallen from what your ideal is. Law abiding citizens are routinely treated like dirt because you have a power trip and a complex. Elderly people are tasered because they are uargumentive, often because they are confused or have health issues. People are treated as underlings when you step into your little black army uniforms and I won't even mention the off-duty behavior where it is obvious that there are two sets of laws and yours is certainly more akin to "anything goes."

I used to defend the police no matter what, but the kinds of individuals that have crept into policing the past few decades like this JO make it thoroughly impossible. Besides, they are all radical democraps and support the party that supports the cops killers and people like Mumia Abu-Jama, just b/c the democraps will pay them more for their votes...There is no reasoning with these guys with this skull thickness.

OH HAIL THE FIRST RESPONDER! is what they expect from us all, without question. They have a license to kill citizens dead and are never expected to suffer a hangnail in subduing anyone, or even use reason or interpersonal skills (I KNOW they spend 4 minutes on it at the 'academy.') Then they set up deals with the dictatorship of democraps and do all they can to insure there is only a ONE PARTY system and they expect blind loyalty from all Americans. I for one have lost faith and trust just as you have lost the ability to "Protect and Serve."

I'm certainly no union officer nor do I make 120,000 a year and I'll never be retired at age 40. More importantly, I do not attempt to stop anyone from questioning critical incidents that happen in our community so they have a better understanding for what has occurred. More individuals from the community need to be involved.

But with that being said, you can sit in your comfy living room tearing good cops to shreads because you have lost your way but that doesn't mean that it'll go unchallenged by individuals who think differently. There is a big difference between an officer committing bad acts and an officer doing his best to "Protect and Serve" while putting his life on the line. Me, I'll stand by the Officer trying his best to do a very difficult job.

Hmm, really? Maybe we ought to starting issuing knives to officers.  >

It's always a gun fight? You're right, the Officer should have put his specialized martial arts training to good use and disarmed the subject with his bare hands...
