Schenectady budget proposed
By: Web Staff

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Acting Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy presentsedhis first proposed budget to the City Council.

The nearly $80 million plan comes with a property tax increase of a little less than two percent, which just makes the state's new two percent cap.

The plan also calls for the elimination of several vacant city jobs, including six from the fire department and four from the police department. But McCarthy adds that eight other police officer jobs have been added, so the department still ends up with four more.

what a joke.....just before election time.....next year it will be a 'surprise' at how the increase happened...."we didn't see it coming." "the feds promised and didn't deliver" "there was rain" "there was snow" blah blah blah.....

the sad part is that elephants have much better memories than humans......

remember the vote....remember the promise.....rememeber the past........

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

So, NOTHING is being cut from the budget other than firefighters - correct? Last year the only cuts were from the fire department (I believe 14 or so jobs).

Why did the City hire a part-time building inspector for ALCO this year? Why haven't the free City vehicles and cell phones been taken away yet? Has anyone checked the status of ALL City workers health care and retirement benefits - after Stratton's handshake deals, why hasn't everyone's contract been looked at?

Nothing is being cut (again), taxes are being raised and it's the same story over and over again. What a waste.

I don't believe any firefighters lost their jobs.
The 2012 budget increases by nearly $2 Million.
The tax rate hike is small, below the supposed cap but the FEES have been INCREASED.

Taxpayers in the city cannot afford this.

Troy has a tax decrease. Albany has no tax increases. Meanwhile over in pathetic Schenectady the all working together crew raise taxes 1.99% {more than Glenville} while increasing all water, garbage and sewer fees. McCarthy also eliminates all City reserves! Total irresponsible joke that lays off no one and cannot balance. Keep the implosion going!

Expect Glenville didn't bust the Cuomo tax cap. Wrong as always. What a disgrace for McCarthy. While Troy lowered taxes and Colonie cut it's budget this Acting Mayor adds $2 million to the City budget.

with this budget, mccarthy has won the election... of course, he had it won as soon as he got the indie lines.hull needed those lines desperately. the fact he got none means numerically he has no chance to win -- all that is left is for him to spend some more money on advisors and other experts who will lie to him and tell him he still has a chance... i have to admit, he is at least making the race interesting.

and meanwhile in glenville, the republicans will be the first to bust through the tax cap and put more pain and misery on the residents of that poor town... who would have thunk that ceuavas and company would do such a horrible thing to the people? not me, for sure. I thought they were fiscal agents of good, so imagine my shock,........

McCarthy has just bambozzled the folks by saying he kept the tax increase below the 2% tax cap.

However...the 'fees' were increased bringing the total tax bill 'over' the 2% cap.

Sweet move, huh?

the fees are not related to the tax cap,. therefore they are not to be considered part of the tax cap..
the math still equals below the tax cap

Absolutely Bumble. The increase in fees the City residents pay will exceed the 2% cap - maybe that's something Hull can bring to the attention of the taxpayers - that would help Hull win the election.

Also, in the Spotlight, Glenville laid out the entire budget. Not only that, but Koetzle asked for taxpayers feedback via email and phone. This is why Koetzle is a great leader - he listens to the people who elected him. Unlike McCarthy, Koetzle earned his votes into office - he didn't pay for them.
