Movie production companies are good corporations. The producer, director, and the stars make millions, while the extras and stage hands make squat. But of course that's fair.
ALBANY — More than 2,100 state employees collected both salaries and pensions last year, with 35 of them receiving more than $200,000 in combined compensation, a review of state records shows.
About 30 employees are also listed on the payroll of two state employers and received taxpayer-funded pensions, according to records of the State and Local Retirement System obtained by Gannett's Albany bureau from the Comptroller's Office through a Freedom of Information Law request.
The list is just a snapshot of the double dipping phenomenon in New York state because there are other types of double dipping that could be occurring in public sector employment.
The details show, however, that as Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to call for massive state layoffs because of New York's fiscal troubles, some employees have been able to retire from their jobs, then go back to work and collect a lucrative salary from the state. About 220 employees had made more than $100,000 in pension and salary as of December, the latest figures available.
In some cases, the pension and salary came from the same employer from which they retired, which has raised questions about why some were able to return to the same jobs with a pension.
The records showed 323 state employees as of December were drawing a paycheck and pension from the same employer. About 60 percent of them work for facilities that serve people with developmental disabilities.
In all, 2,129 state employees had collected pensions and salaries last year, a total cost of $131 million, records show. The average employee on the list collected $61,479 in salary and pension. Most earned part-time salaries while in retirement.
Among the findings:
•The highest recipient was George Philip, president of the State University of New York at Albany, who earned a $280,000 salary and a $261,000 pension — a total of $541,000. He spent most of his career working for the state's Teachers Retirement System before moving over to SUNY.

Two weeks ago, my colleague Joe Spector and I reported on thousands of state workers who were drawing both a pension and a salary. We found more than 2,100 state employees who were “double-dipping.”The story generated plenty of interest and a lot of feedback from readers.
One gentleman from Penfield wrote with this question: “why does the media almost always neglect to talk about school districts when it comes to offenses such as double dipping?”
It’s a fair question, and there are two answers. First, getting that information is a technically complex task. It’s easy to ask the Penfield school district for a list of employees and how much they earned last year. And it’s easy to ask the state for a list of school employees receiving pensions. But since those figures come from two different databases, connecting the dots between them can be a challenge.
You end up with a Robert Brown who currently works as a teacher and three retired teachers named Robert Brown drawing state pensions, and no way to definitively make a match.
For state workers, we were able to get a list of double dippers by asking the state to identify workers who were in both databases (pensions and payroll). Presumably, they were able to match folks based on SSN or some other unique identifier. We can’t do that with teachers, because the payroll data and pension data comes from three different sources.
Prompted by this reader’s inquiry, I looked at the 2010 payrolls and pensions for Penfield and didn’t find any obvious matches. A quick review of public records showed few if any matches for teachers and other school employees in Monroe County.
But don’t just take my word for it. Payroll information for government workers is available to the public. If you think there’s a name we’re missing, please email me and I’ll look into it.
Public employees are paid with taxpayers dollars. We feel that reporting this information is an important part of our first amendment responsibility to hold elected officials responsible for how they spend that money.

ONLY because the 30somethings have him in their recent past memory...as do the 20 somethings and 40 somethings.....hind sight is always 20s/30s......hit the road running with plans galore investments, following the 'usual' path most travelled....and that road was there long before Bush...only these folks are to young.....the only thing they will remember and will be affected by is 9/11 and the brave new world of patriot act/homeland security/realID......this protest, although I dont disagree, will be the next strap for our oxen muzzle.....virtual value will rule, only we know it and the leaders are to slow to respond.....they forgot to hand out more straw for the bricks.....no different than the social security lie; the let your money work for you lie; the I work this hard so you dont have to lie......shame shame shame
