There are many businesses that would suffer greatly if the canals were not able to open in the spring. In fact, many businesses that would probably go under as they are seasonal and dependent on the waterway being usable.

No one could have foreseen the effects of this hurricane and how destructive it was.

My own well wishes go out to everyone, especially those in Schoharie and Rotterdam Junction. I lived in the junction many years ago and I can't imagine their losses. If you can attend any of the fundraisers for the people of our community please do so.

I personally was fortunate not to have lost either boat, one at Mohawk Valley Marina and one at the Schenectady Yacht Club. That seems such a pittance after so many have lost so much.

I take issue with that statement since I knew over a week in advance that one of the largest hurricanes in modern history(models had it at the level of the 1944) was headed our way with predictions of 12" of rain and 100mph winds. We have dams, spillways and floodgates at various locks at the elevation changes along the Mohawk River in order to control flooding. Dropping the levels to winter heights would have been prudent based on the predictions which were worse than the actual storm. Of course because there is a Democrap administration and they control the various agencies and levels of government in our state, no one will ask questions and no one will be accountable. The NYC water department is also to blame for reserving the level of the Schoharie Reservoir at highs which are not compatible with flood management. Once again, NYS bureaucrats ruin everything they come near, let alone touch and no one is responsible for managing the river levels when there is huge notice of a coastal hurricane. This was no thunderstorm. The Canal Corp was caught sleeping. Someone should be accountable.

Unfortunately GB, the news follks have cried wolf more times then not with failed 'emergency' scares after failed 'emergency' scares. Now perhaps the powers that be should have listened to the 'wolf' and prepared for the worse. But in many cases, the average everyday joe, just thought it was another chicken little scare!

Hell, if someone gets a hang nail, it becomes a major health concern and next thing you know they have a vaccine for it!!

The canal is fine. All of the bridges are 100%--go take a swim in the lock when they are closing the gates.

Just wear something brightly colored so we can dredge you stinking body out so as not to pollute the finest waterway in the Northeast....you would be considered toxic waste and a waste of a heartbeat!

You do have a point, bumblethru. It is nice to be able to read differing viewpoints about issues that affect us all, to get a broader understanding. Gertie has a point also, but it is the one his head comes to.

GG is a parody of himself. No one thinks like this kiss rear. Thank God we have such a qualified Canal Corp "leader" with his background in political science from Moo U. We don't need no civil engineer or planner-no, no no. This must remain a political lob job for the worst Mayor in Schenectady history.

I disagree with your first point (the canal and a number of bridges will need extensive repairs) and I think your second point is out of line.

Oh yeah, after "go do a goat" and many other fine and nasty insults and taunts to people that they should, shut up, die, play in traffic or whatever, now he politely tells his other half it is "out of line." You prefer neapolitan and GG prefers vanilla so it can't be you, I know, I know.

The FACT is that it is some other person(s) posting under those names --- whether you want to believe the TRUTH or not.

And yes -- as far as I am concerned you can go screw a goat or play in traffic.

No one could have foreseen the EFFECTS of Hurricane Katrina either, or whether or not an earthquake would be destructive, or if that tornado would have even occurred let alone taken out 20 homes.
All any of us can do is TRY to be prepared, then do the best we can to help out our neighbors, friends and family.
The dams, spillways and floodgates (although they are not flood gates) were not put in to control flooding. Flooding cannot be controlled any more than an earthquake be prevented or tornados stopped. The river was "canalized" so that the original canal could be made larger. The Canal Corp never sleeps and only Mother Nature can be held accountable.
