Transmission towers topple into Mohawk
National Grid working at Lock 10
September 10, 2011 5:05 PM

National Grid spokesman Patrick Stella says the Mohawk River has cut a path around part of Lock 10 in the Amsterdam area, eroding soil that holds up metal transmisison towers. He says towers have fallen into the river, along with power cables. Stella said the cables in the river were not live but that others hanging from the towers are.
Stella says it happened around 1:30 a.m., cutting power for about 20,000 customers. He says all but about 300 have power back on and had no estimate on when they will be.
Part of Route 5 is closed. Stella says power cables are down across the road and in the river. He says part of Route 5S is eroding and that an effort is on to dam up the river in that trouble spot.

More success from the Stratton commission. Maybe it is just a bad dream.

This is easily repairable and was caused by floodwaters undermining the footing. All of which is no big deal. Stop politicizing a bad rainstorm.

OK, we'll stop "politicizing it," instead we'll ask, who made sure that after the power was back on after the storm, who made sure that everything was back to as it should and stable enough to continue?  Was this checked to make sure there would be no further complications with an upcoming storm?  We saw the devestation that came with the storm, now we want to make sure that if the same thing happens again, the infrastructure will be strong enough to withhold, including power lines such as this one.

The state says that there are tens of millions in damage to the locks and bridge structures and GG says it's an easy fix, I believe the state.

The folks I know from schoharie are blaming the 'end results' on the Gilboa dam. They said that they were told to lower the water level on the dam a week before the storm....but the 'people in charge' didn't think the rain was going to be that bad. This may just be 'hear say'...........but that's what they're sayin and that's what we're hearin'.

Should not the locks be able to handle a rainstorm? That is a question that needs to be asked, and answered. In any case, people ARE talking about it and why try to shut down discussion? If BS can't take the scrutiny, he could apply to be an animal control officer or something because I hear one is needed on Hamilton Hill. I could show him where that is. That might be a job he can do.
