The town currently can't afford an expenditure of that size in an economy as bad as it is.

The town isn't being asked to spend any money on the project.  It is up to the property owners in the fire district  (which includes a good portion of Princetown and a part of Guilderland).  The cost will not be any lower waiting for the economy to improve.

The building is 40 years old and is not big enough for the new LARGER fire and rescue vehicles ... NONE of the improvements are frivolous .. ALL are necessary -----  like moving the emergency generator, all HVAC equipment and the office and communications center  to the new 1st floor which will be above the 500 year flood level.

The other alternative is to build a completely new building -- and that would cost much more than expanding the existing building.

The final decision will be made by the property owners IN the fire district --- we don't need nayboobs from OUTSIDE the district telling us what is worth spending OUR money on.   Any candidate or would-be candidate from OUTSIDE the district who tries to politicize this decision ... will have hell to pay for interfering with OUR right to make up our own minds and to support OUR fire district.

I know many folks in that fire district who are totally against this large of a proposal and the huge tax increase....especially at a time when they know their town taxes will probably go up substantially this year. And at a time when the nation is in a recession almost to match the great depression. The folks I have talked to actually said....'We voted against the rems taxing district, we'll vote this one down too'.

I guess time will tell, huh?

The proposal is WELL WORTH the price.   The improvements are ALL necessary -- there are no frivolous items in the proposal.

Again, it boils down to those of us who believe that PUBLIC SAFETY IS A VALUE  .. A GOOD THING and those who do NOT value public safety.    From the sounds of it the extreme right wing of the GOP and the gang of thugs led by GB  (Joe Suhrada) and company of nayboobs  .. are hell bent on cutting off our public safety institutions at the knees.

We can NOT let them put our public safety in jeopardy --- We must vote YES for the expansion proposal.

Will this be a vote of all registered voters in the district, or only property owners / taxpayers?

I am not sure if it is residents or property owners ---- but I do know the district includes parts of Princetown and Guilderland ... and many of those people are in favor of the expansion as that is where there has been a lot of growth in commercial and residential buildings.

Bottomline --- the current building is NOT big enough to house the newer firefighting equipment, the firehouse doesn't have showers or laundry facilities to clean up/decontaminate themselves and their clothes after fighting fires ....   and the office, communications command center and the station's emergency generator and other basic systems (hvac, electrical, etc)  are currently located IN THE BASEMENT ... and the bathrooms and the building are NOT handicapped accessible.

The building is NOt up to federal and state standards ---- building a NEW station would cost a number of times more than the proposed $3.5 million  --- we either need to expand the current station or build a new station or face ... so it is much wiser to go the most cost effective way ----  VOTE YES FOR THE EXPANSION.

Residents in that district have said that it would be cheaper to bring the already existing building up to code and will not vote forthis beast of a tax increase. Not now anyway. Like they said.....we voted down rems....we'll vote this down too.
