State Canal System hit hard
The New York State Canal System was hit hard by the floodwaters.
Thursday, the Canal Corporation Director Brian Stratton got a first hand look near Amsterdam.
"Our damages from this storm are in the tens of millions. Tremendous damage not to locks themselves, but to some of dam gates to structures," said Stratton.
The Canal System lost three of its lock houses and one power house that dates back to 1913, all during Irene.

The Erie Canal has not been a money making proposition since the commercial traffic declined. The man in charge now has years of experience in screwing people out of their money for useless projects so watch your taxes/tolls go up to pay for the damage. |

Looks like the historic canal system is no longer!!! Except for leisure boating, it isn't a commerce canal and hasn't been for decades.....no? |
