Irene's damage was caused by a perfect storm...NOT climate change. It was channeled up the east coast by a blocking Bermuda high to the east and a strong High pressure ridge to the west, that ridge is producing the great weather we have now. This same scenario occurred in 1821... long before climate change.

I roll my eyes every time I see a tv scientist try to tie climate change to any weather event.
More snow? Climate change
Less snow? climate change
More hurricanes? climate change
less hurricanes? climate change
Texas drought? climate change

...its really ridiculous.

Come on, Tbird, get with it.  Change is all around us, and its inevitalbe.  Look at it this way, those who say change will happen will say its happening if it doesn't, since not changing is a change from the constant change, hence, no change IS change...and around we go again.

Global warming is just another feel good money grab used by the right to make the sheople feel like they are being taken care of. Directed (brainwashing) the heard into thinking that there really is something that they can do to prevent the WEATHER!!! OMG!!

The northeast has been hit with hurricanes before.....long before the industrial age. There were also earthquakes long before the industrial age. Just remember back to the good old 70's when the heard of sheople were being told to get ready for the coming ICE AGE!!! OMG!!! I believe that it was then (AROUND 197 that government grew in leap and bounds with an ENERGY DEPT. So here we are 40+ year later having the same exact conversation!!

Good job hippies!!!

Wish these rules were all spelled out in one place so we could get a full list.

I really don't think this is the time to make this catastrophe a political or environmental issue right now. The community should come together and help those in need. There will be plenty of time, later on to express our opinions on how the government was right or wrong on how they reacted to this and/or how global warming created this whole thing................k?

Discuss that with the Ron Paul crowd... Paul wants to eliminate FEMA... the only help that homeowners and business owners will get.

If Ron Paul wanted to create a U.N.E.M.A, he'd be a hero.  Forget the federal government controlling emergency response, the United Nations would do a MUCH better job and be a much more efficient. The bigger and more centralized control the better.

Well of course it's all the help the homeowners and business owner will get...............that's because that is the only system in place....DUH!
I'm sure that we can all agree that ALL of the government systems in place are failing or have failed. We need to 'start over'!!
And are you suggesting that the community should and can sit back because GOV ALMIGHTY will take care of everything??
Come on boxy...the 60's are OVER.......it didn't work...........time to move forward forward.

Again, bumble is stuck in the 60's.
~ What didn't work Bumble??? Social Security? started way before the 60's.
~FEMA?  FEMA can trace its beginnings to the Congressional Act of 1803.

Bumbles failed 60's hippies???  Some Failures of the 60'S??? Maybe Bumble is referring to Ron Paul's Medical Degree? 1961?  Is Bumble talking about Ron Paul when he talks about the 60's are over... It didn't work... Time to move forward?

Bumble does seem to have an infatuation with all things 60's.

Im not for or against the argument of climate change.  But I am a little confused as to why the south is getting a ton of snow and we are getting hurricanes.  Did someone pull a switcheroo?  I actually blame a friend that once lived in Boston.  He moved to SC and since then, they have snow and bad winter weather.

If Ronny Paul is so against FEMA funds... You'd think he'd refuse them, but nooooooooooooo Texas leads the nation in 2011 with 84 Declared Disasters that sucked down Taxpayer FEMA dollars.

As a Texas Congressman, Paul should be fighting FEMA dollars at home... but instead he's fighting against FEMA dollars for New York, Vermont, North Carolina, New Jersey... as Paul bows and takes the FEMA dollars for his home state Texas.
Hypocrite!

Local lawmaker votes against FEMA funds
Thursday, October 02, 2008

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Hundreds of people were left homeless and entire communities were washed away. So why did a local lawmaker vote down help from FEMA following Hurricane Ike?

It's his job to represent the people in DC, but US Representative Ron Paul voted "no" to a disaster recovery aid package that would help his devastated district. Congressman Paul's district is a large area along the Gulf Coast, right where Hurricane Ike made landfall.....................

In Washington, Paul's already had a chance to help his constituents, and he voted no, which wasn't much of a surprise.

"I told you they call him Dr. No," Coburn explained.

Last week, Congress passed a $23 billion FEMA disaster recovery plan - money his constituents need. It was attached to a bigger law - one that kept the government running but also funded stuff like Homeland Security grants and prison sex abuse prevention programs. Ron Paul has opposed stuff like that for 30 years. And just two weeks after parts of his district were flattened by the storm, he stuck to his principle.

"I get a lot of credit for that - for standing up for what I promised to do and that I understand the financial problems of the country," Paul explained. "For my part, I usually come out very positive on this."

How Does Global Warming Make Hurricanes Like Irene More Destructive?

Climate science suggests that global warming will make hurricanes like Irene more destructive in three ways (all things being equal):

1.    Sea level rise makes storm surges more destructive.
2.   “Owing to higher SSTs [sea surface temperatures] from human activities, the increased water vapor in the atmosphere leads to 5 to 10% more rainfall and increases the risk of flooding,” as NCAR Senior Scientist Kevin Trenberth put it in an email to me today.
3.    “However, because water vapor and higher ocean temperatures help fuel the storm, it is likely to be more intense and bigger as well,” as Trenberth writes

On the third point, warming also extends the range of warm SSTs, which can help sustain the strength of a hurricane as it steers on a northerly track. As meteorologist and former hurricane hunter Dr. Jeff Masters has explained:

… this year sea surface temperatures 1 – 3°F warmer than average extend along the East Coast from North Carolina to New York. Waters of at least 26°C extend all the way to Southern New Jersey, which will make it easier for Irene to maintain its strength much farther to the north than a hurricane usually can. During the month of July, ocean temperature off the mid-Atlantic coast (35°N – 40°N, 75°W – 70°W) averaged 2.6°F (1.45°C) above average, the second highest July ocean temperatures since record keeping began over a century ago (the record was 3.8°F above average, set in 2010.) These warm ocean temperatures will also make Irene a much wetter hurricane than is typical, since much more water vapor can evaporate into the air from record-warm ocean surfaces.

Also, hurricanes tend to be self-limiting, in that they churn up deeper (usually cooler) water, that can stop them from gaining strength and also weaken them.  So since global warming also warms the deeper ocean, it further helps hurricanes stay stronger longer.
