This isn't a 500 year event anymore...Just ask any liberal democrat...This is - GLOBAL WARMING - Haven't you watched The Inconvenient Truth?  These floods are going to happen at a greater frequency and MORE SEVERE.  These floods aren't 500 years cycles, that would play into the hands of the man made global warming non believers, the people that believe warming and cooling of the earth are cyclical.  If these democrat city planners believe their parties own Bullshit, they wouldn't build condos on the river since Al Gore and the rest of the loons believe global warming is going to create more frequent flooding, and stronger hurricanes.

Yes east coast hurricane's are far less common than gulf hurricane's.  However it's just dumb luck that the ones that do head up the east coast don't often impact us greatly.  I'd say this event might become more common over the next 50 years.  Not likely to repeat this year or next year, but I am skeptical that it's a once in a 500 year event.

Especially with the REAL global warming that is actually happening - whether caused by man or the current position of our solar system within our galaxy.  (or overall cyclic solar activity)   I truly believe the earth is warming, gradually - but it is happening.  So, more hurricane's for the US, and presumably for the northeast.
