When running for office, Bush proposed a 'guest worker program' that would have addressed the issue of illegals, yet allowed immigrants to work in the USA legally for a short period of time. Unfortunately, the Sept 11 attacks and opposition from Right Wing Racists killed his plan before it ever got off the ground.
As a border governor, Bush saw the need for these workers, and knew the problems associated with drugs crossing the border mixed in with the flood of illegals. Once you allow guest workers to enter the US legally, the only ones jumping the border would be terrorists and drug dealers.
GWB was a terrible president, but this is one issue he did have right.

The state of Georgia has done a fine job of ridding themselves of their illegals... The farmers of Georgia are paying premium wages to find someone... anyone to pick and pack their produce. Some of their crop will be left in the field because there is no one who will pick or pack it. Because of this laborer shortage, many farms may go out of business.

I think it's a surplus of lazy bums that believe they are entitled to a specific vocation and wage, and our government allows and even encourages people to continue that destructive behavior, by allowinng people to continue to collect unemployment and welfare benefits when obviously there are jobs available.

it's not just the whiteman.....it's an entire system that encompasses the globe....always has been and always will be....the problem is when we 'get comfortable'....the strings for the cost of that peach are being pulled by other nations all connected to the central banking system...consumers and labor are just pawns....

But this doesn't address the increase in wages that will be required to attract legal workers. I thought that was the basis of your comments...any change in the status quo will result in increased wages AND retail prices.

The voters. Their parents voted for politicians who voted for the welfare state. They imitated their parents. Now the bills are coming due, as they do in every ponzi scheme. I'm scared to death of what this country may become... You won't have the civilized order of Japan after their tsunami. Cities will be war zones and even good sized towns won't be safe. We have cultivated a segment of our society that thinks they are entitled to benefits we can no longer pay. I am seriously considering moving out in to the country. This entitlement shortfall will effect EVERY segment of our society.

For much of American history, Mexican workers would cross the border to work as laborers for the picking season. Once the crop was harvested they would return to Mexico and their families. Under GWB's guest worker plan, they would continue to do so... there would be no change in the wages paid for this work so no impact on prices.
