Geraldine Forgett hugs her children, Gage, 11, left, Jamie, 7, and Marcus, 9, right, at Veterans Park in Schenectady on Friday, August 19, 2011. Geraldine is currently staying at the Salvation Army's Evangeline Booth Miracle Home with her three children and take them to the library and park every morning.

CAPITAL REGION — Geraldine Forgett has been living at a Salvation Army shelter with her three young children since being evicted from her apartment a few weeks ago. The 49-year-old Schenectady woman lost her job as a food server at Ellis Hospital when the Department of Social Services grant funding the position wasn’t renewed.
Forgett said she and the kids, ages 7, 9 and 11, are doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. “You have to have patience — being in the same room all the time, sleeping in the same room. They do get on each other’s nerves,” she said.
She said she hopes to find a new job and apartment by September so the kids can be out of the shelter by the time school starts.
The number of homeless kids in schools across the New York state is on the rise. Nearly 20,000 students were classified as homeless in the 2009-2010 school, year compared with about 12,000 in the 2007-08 year, according to state Department of Education data.
Local school districts also have seen an increase of homeless students. About 1,500 students in a 35-school district area analyzed by The Sunday Gazette were considered homeless in the 2009-2010 — up from 900 in 2007-08.
Schenectady City School District’s homeless student population rose from 43 in the 2009-2010 year to 72 in 2010-11, according to James Goyette, supervisor of attendance. In Fonda-Fultonville, the homeless population nearly doubled, from 19 to 33 from 2007 to 2010........................>>>>..............................>>>>...................................................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/aug/21/0821_homeless/

This is a perfect example of when government gets involved = FAIL!!

Where did they think this woman was going to work after the grant ran out? The grant(taxpayers) paid her salary!!  So this woman went from one government teet to another!! SUCCESS!!!

Is anyone surprised?

Schenectady homeowners lose their homes to tax seizure because they can't afford to pay the taxes of the millioniares and billioniares downtown.   Renters are evicted beause the rents are so high because the tax bills on the landlords have gone up so high because the landlords have to pay the taxes for downtowns political cronies too

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

A 'fixer up' house for $50K in the city has taxes of almost $6K/year. OMG!! That is almost $600/month JUST FOR TAXES!! Add the repairs, (which are usually huge) insurance and mortgage..........and what the hell.....you could buy a nicer home in a nicer area with a better school system and less crime!!

And this $50K fixer upper would continue to devalue unlike other areas. Not a good investment for your hard earned buck!

interestingly -- school districts in Saratoga County had HIGHER numbers of homeless children than did Schenectady  ....  clearly this proves that Saratoga GOP majority and GOP State Legislators  (especially Seantor Hugh Farley) are abysmal failures -- and should resign immediately

Maybe they can move to Europe or Mexico and get everything wonderful and free. I would gladly pay to transport a low class person overseas. How about you? If they move to socialist meccas things will be great for them and for us.

For that to happen would make it necessary for the teachers to live in the district, though, otherwise the students would be going to a different school, if their residence was at the teacher's houses.
