The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

Personally -- I think things were better when the US Senators were elected by the State Legislatures  (1789 through approximately 1916)  .. it makes sense for a variety of reasons - but mainly because  the Federal Government exists because it was created by the states coming together and agreeing to its existence.

I am opposed to abortion, the death penalty and euthanasia ... so my only problem with requiring women who are seeking abortions to have a sonogram is that abortion should not be legal.   There should be a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution that outlaws abortion,  the death penalty and euthanasia .......
and a Balanced Budget Amendment as well.

From what I have read of Governor Perry's comment about secession .. I believe he was saying that the State of Texas might have to secede from the Union if the Federal Government doesn't do its job controlling the national borders.   The border problem is a HUGE one ....  and it is not just the southern borders ..... the US has a big problem with people who overstay their visas.    If the Feds can't keep track of the people who are in our country on visas -- one has to wonder how the Feds can really protect us from terrorists and spies infiltrating our country and doing us harm.  ------  there also seems to be a belief .. that when Texas was admitted to the Union that it had some provision allowing it to secede.    Personally, I have not studied that SPECIFIC issue in any detail .. but I have always believed that since the states VOLUNTARILY entered the Union  ..  it is logical that they could VOLUNTARILY leave the Union.    Again -- LOGICALLY --- the bigger question is how would a state LEGALLY leave the Union.       One could argue that the Constitution only provides for the legal process for joining the Union  but not for any process to leave the Union  ---- that is true .. but on a few occasions the Federal Government has disregarded that LEGAL process and  "extra-legally" (I am being polite) admitted a state into the Union   (Nevada for one ... West Virginia for another) ....
