Mayoral candidate Hull calls on McCarthy to debate

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

Mayoral candidate Roger Hull challenged Acting Mayor Gary Mc-Carthy to an early debate Monday and alleged that McCarthy illegally kept Hull off the ballot on the minor party lines.
Hull managed to collect enough signatures to force a write-in primary campaign for all three minor parties, and demanded a debate with McCarthy before the primary on Sept. 13.
“Any time, anywhere, any format you like,” Hull said, making his challenge public during the privilege of the floor section of the City Council meeting.
But McCarthy, who oversaw campaigns for many years as the chair of the local Democratic committee, critiqued Hull’s methods rather than giving him a defi nite answer on his challenge.
It’s too early to debate, McCarthy said.
“It’s odd. It shows inexperience,” he said of Hull’s challenge. “People now don’t care. You get past Labor Day, people start to care.”
The primaries are a week after Labor Day. If Hull were to win, his name would appear on that party’s line on Election Day, giving him a better chance of beating McCarthy.
Hull is the founder of the new Alliance Party, and has been endorsed by the Republicans. McCarthy is a Democrat.
The minor parties in question are the Conservative, Independence and Working Families, all of which have endorsed McCarthy.
Hull acknowledged that write-in campaigns rarely succeed. He had hoped to force a primary in which his name was on the ballot. But he didn’t collect enough signatures for that — a situation for which he blamed McCarthy.
He told McCarthy that he should have allowed more Alliance Party supporters to become Commissioner of Deeds. Those who collect signatures of residents who are not of the same party — such as Republicans collecting Independence Party signatures — must be a commissioner.
McCarthy, as mayor, can grant or deny commissioner applications. He approved Hull, but denied others, including Hull’s son, who threatened to sue.
McCarthy then approved his application — but sent the answer through regular mail just before the deadline for primary election petitions. ..............................>>>>...................>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01002&AppName=1

Unfortunately we all know what Gary McCarthy stands for-increasing the highest property taxes in the region. A tool for the DEM working together morons. He was the only vote in 2008 to INCREASE TAXES above the outrageous Stratton proposal. Roger Hull is a proven problem solver. He took Union College from a so-so college to mini-Ivy League status.

McCarthy won't debate because what are his accomplishments? Politicizing the commissioner of deeds. Sitting like a lump at Metrograft meetings. Refusing to fight for a more equitable County sales tax payment for the oppressed City. Fighting for higher property taxes while refusing to cut anything.

Hull should have responded:

Apparently you haven't been paying attention Gary.  The people are more engaged than ever.  And your arrogance and dismissing of what people want, and what they care about is why they are engaged.

McCarthy is no Erastus Corning. He doesn't seem to realize that.
Anyone who sat on city while BS ran roughshod over the citizenry has some explaining to do. As in "how can you work for the district attorney's office, as an investigator no less, and not notice crime and corruption right in front of you?"
Both candidates have to explain why, if Metroplex is so great, we are seeing utterly shocking decay in our once fine neighborhoods. How does "Little Italy" for instance, help someone who lives on Michigan Avenue? And does either of them know where Michigan Avenue is?
We need to go back to the city manager form of government. That had problems too, but we didn't have the problems with basic services that we do know. BS just didn't bother running the city, and neither did anyone else.

I would love to see a debate between these two. And it should be scheduled, in the evening, at proctors (free to the public) and aired 'live' on osm!! (no editing allowed )

Free at Proctor's? C'mon BT. Mercury Morris has got to eat. Besides he has PILOTS and loans not to pay.

OSM doesn't want to disrupt its unique programming schedule. The Olson recycling commercial that runs 24X7 for the 2 drooling morons that actually watch this channel.

It's not too early to debate. He was down here campaigning with his entourage a couple of weekends ago, must have been
about ten of them- not too early for that was it.

McCarthy is acting like a big bully who stomps his feet while having a tantrum. The Commissioner of Deeds fiasco is plain
ridiculous. I got one last year, walked into Strattons office, Jordan handed me the ppwk and off I went to file it.  Simple. I hope
he gets sued by Hull's son.

McCarthy has some issues. Not up for a challenge, perhaps? He's afraid of something.

Not debating has worked before!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Aired on OSM?   Morris would NEVER allow any debate which would question his mis-use of taxpayers money.

I think the debates should be aired on 6, 10, 13, adn 23!

I wonder if McCarthy will even debate after the primaries, before the general election!

Morris won't let that be played! No way!

McCarthy is a total flop. No other DEM wanted the Stratton mess to clean up. Hull is raising twice as much money for a TV ad blitz. McCarthy lost to Al-lost to Hugh and will lose to Roger. It's enough already. The DEMS need new candidates not the same tax and borrow fossils over and over.

So far McCarthy has slammed Hull for the Union College tax exempt homes on Seward. What a joke!  Back when this all went through in 1999, McCarthy was City Council President. Guess he forgot that.
