Wetsons Hamburgers by the Big N. My great uncle owned the Sinclair gas station on Union St. All the great Italian restaurants on Barrett Street (my favorite was Mother Ferros).
And, the cars that we drove that if we had today would be worth big money. My 68 Firebird convertible and 69 Mustang Fastback (with the "wrong" engine - the 351 Windsor instead of the more sought after 351 Cleveland).
Why yes she did!! By golly I know you too!!! Well kinda, you're the same age as my sis I think. I used to deliver the gazette to your house, and if I'm not mistaken, I could cut through your backyard to get to the other street (can't remember the name). My Mom, your Mom and Rose G. were all good friends when they started working at Grant's.
That bus stop was great especially in the winter. On the coldest days, we'd always have a bunch of kids hanging out on the front porch which was enclosed'
We had that huge backyard, and in the summer there would be nightly softball games. Ahhh youth.

Okay....put your thinking caps on....what was name of the place on Kings road that used to have rock concerts (later they were imported foods warehouse).
I think it may have been a Polish community center, not real sure though. Not sure if anybody remembers, but it was actually used as Pinewood Elementary the first part of the 1958-59 school year. The new building wasn't going to be complete until after New Years, and they had to have a place for us to go, so they put up plywood partitions and that's where I spent the first part of 6th grade. We used to shoot spitballs over the partitions into the other classrooms.

Here's a photo of the old homestead. This was taken in 1976. Not long after it was converted into what it is today.
Joe, do you remember when the convoys of Army vehicles would go rumbling down Helderberg on their way to where ever they were heading? As a little kid it was an amazing sight.
1971 concert at SUNY Albany....Delaney Bonnie and Friends....friends were Billy Cobham and Eric Clapton! What a concert that was!
By 1971 I'd left Rotterdam again and was living on Castro st. in San Francisco and a place called Wheeler Ranch 70 mi. north. But between '69 and Jan. '71 I managed to take in Woodstock (Santana's sat. afternoon show is indelibly etched in my brain), Muddy Waters at the Washington Ave. Armory (also where the ill-fated Dead show was), Grand Funk Railroad, The Blues Project and Jefferson Starship on a triple bill at the Palace and Chicago at SPAC. I remember seeing Janis at the Aerodrome and going to the Fox Hollow Folk Festival in Petersburg. (The Old Songs Festival in Altamont is the off-shoot of that one.)
These days I think more about my childhood in Rotterdam (1953-65) than I do about young adulthood and beyond. (Although I am writing a blog archiving 30+ years of the band I played in). I mean this was a very cool place to grow up. It still had a little rural feeling to it and really didn't start changing until the mid '60's. I'm actually a little sad that I can't find more photos and written history about the town during that time period.
BTW Does anybody who went to Bigsbee school remember where the gym and Library were? My sister thinks maybe in the basement.
Gym/auditorium (and music rooms) when I went to Bigsbee was separate building (now where Mallozzi's retaurant is)connected by covered walkway from main building and I believe libaray was in basement of main building
JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!

Hmmm.... okay I remember a little different. I thought every thing was in the basement. My first year at Bigsbee was 2nd grade 1954-55. I was there until 4th grade 1956-57. I don't remember the gym being there before '57. There's a bit of history on the Mohonasen website, and the district was created in Aug. '56. which means that stuff wasn't built until the summer of '57. If that's the case, then it's pretty amazing how fast it got built.
5th grade 1957-58 was spent at Bradt School 1/2 day sessions. There were more kids than buildings available, that's why they did that. That was also the first year we started taking the bus. 6th grade 1958-59 we were bused to Pinewood and for the first half of the school year we were at the Polish center on King's road.
By 7th grade 1959-60 the high school and junior high were finished and my class (class o' '65) was the first to go through grades 7-12 at that building.
The gym had to be rebuillt after the tornado knocked part of it down.
