Cashier at Erie Boulevard gas station is retiring after years of keeping the coffee fresh

SCHENECTADY -- Richard Baldwin affectionately refers to the large numbers of Schenectady police officers he's befriended over more than two decades as his "boys."

"I call them my boys because they are much younger than I am," the 73-year-old said during a recent interview days before his scheduled retirement Sunday from his cashier job at the Sunoco gas station on Erie Boulevard after 24 years.

The place became something of a pit stop for some officers, who after completing an overnight shift would drop in to refuel with coffee and read the newspaper while talking with Baldwin on a broad range of topics.

During his 11 p.m.-to-8 a.m. shift, Baldwin said, he would make sure the coffee and other breakfast staples were always fresh and the papers were available.
