You are a hypocrite -- you say it is wrong to solely blame the GOP when they were in power -- but blast  the Democrats for the past 8 years ..   this why your arguments have no credibility with  REASONABLE and THINKING  people.

I think the point of BT's post was that economic downturn began 40 years ago.  The Democrats are using this facade of economic activity created by Metroplex over the past 8 years, and calling it a renaissance.  Schenectady hasn't created any economic growth in 40 years.  That is why our taxes are so high.  They just take our sales tax revenue and leverage it to the tune of $100M of investment (give-away) then call it economic activity.  There is not one economic indicator that would say otherwise.  The 3500 jobs statistic is a joke and not one news organization ever asks for proof of those jobs.  And to go one step further, how many of those jobs would disappear without the HUGE PROPERTY TAX BREAKS that go along with the Metroplex money?

Ask NE Jewelry. Ask Olender's. Ask The Big Hose.  Ask Media Done. They all abandoned Downtown even with the tax giveaways-taking the promised good jobs. Even DEMS now admit that the 3,500 jobs figure was made up. But the stooges in the media kept repeating it as if it was sent from God.

Proctor's created 3,500 jobs? SS Savage created 3,500 jobs? Death Ray created 3,500 jobs? Then the funniest ANG created 3,500 jobs since he flipped out! Meanwhile the Schenectady County unemployment rate exploded and has stayed the highest in the region. Can one of these media stooges ask for list of jobs created/jobs lost Downtown since 2008?

They weren't 'created' the majority were 'relocated'.

Again...........an out and out lie by giving the residents a false sense of economic security! Go ask the folks at the dss building and the unemployment office and those waiting for section 8 housing how those new jobs are doing.

You can't even give houses away at $50K!! It is shameful what the once beautiful city of schenectady has become!!

A new Heritage Area Visitors Center will open at Proctors in downtown Schenectady, New York.

The 1,200-square-foot visitors center will be located across from the Proctors box office and include exhibits on the city’s history and brochures highlighting places to visit in the area, officials said today.

The visitors center will be ready to open by late summer.

The project is funded by a $180,000 federal Highway Administration National Scenic Byways Grant and $40,000 from the http://www.bizjournals.com/pro.....nt_authority/306285/.

Adirondack Studios, a firm in Argyle, New York, that makes theatrical sets, and http://www.bizjournals.com/pro.....e_architects/270801/ of Schenectady will design the visitors center.

Proctors hosted 1,728 events last year, attracting more than 600,000 people.

Things are getting better? Where? For bankruptcy attorneys, moving van companies and DEM City Hall lobs. Just this week we learned that 3 more Downtown businesses are shutting. It's About Time, the bead store and Media Done all just announced they are leaving Downtown. Subtract 20 more jobs from the made up DEM list.

Where are the jobs Death Ray? Where is the taxpayer dividends Judy DAG? Crickets chirping. The DEMS know things are bad. Except for Cousin Vinny no one can sell their properties. The entire corrupt DEM house has collapsed. There are no more carcasses left to pick or tax.

Quoted from Madam X
I seldom go downtown anymore. When I do, I go to the library, The Open Door, and perhaps CVS. Once in a while the Pizza King. Three of those places
were there in the seventies. That's my point. Where do you shop downtown, anyone? I mean, anywhere that hasn't been there all along? I know a lot
of businesses closed then, but I remember going downtown more often to more places back then. Where do people go now?

the truth of the matter is.........retail businesses don't look at downtown schenectady or any part of the city as profitable. If they did, they would have settled there before Mohawk commons. Ya can't get much farther from the city than where mohawk commons is today.

No one wants to come to schenectady, And rotterdam is becoming the same. There are many rotterdamians that will not venture toward altamont ave. They are now opting to shop Rt 20. There they can avoid the crane street (aka hamilton hill) scum and the buses. It's cleaner and they can actually feel safe shopping at night.

They can't get any stores in Proctor's arcade so Mercury Morris fills it with this nonsense. Great for the 5 tourists that show up Downtown. The jewelry store just fled-so much for high end retail. I thought Gillette House would be transformed into a County visitors center? lol!

It’s All Greek To Me
June 20, 2011 at 11:33 pm by Philip Morris

The continuing bluster about the Greek economy I think is a waste of ink.

Over a year ago, in another post (http://blog.timesunion.com/philipmorris/never-on-sunday/499/#comments), I suggested that the state of the Greek economy is exactly the outcome one could predict from the attitude and actions of the citizens.

They wanted a poor government. Now they absolutely have one.

The failure of the Greek economy will not, though, unravel the rest of the world. Most other countries and citizens realize the commonwealth they share and are not gleeful at the paradox of individual success and public failure. The Greek economy is small and Greeks fully capable of “making it work.”. With few options, they will finally pay their taxes, forgo some of their public benefits and learn to share responsibility for their country and society.

But while the country of my heritage struggles with the ramifications of their “kill the government” past mentalities, I am struck with the growing similarities of some of America’s leaders and citizens.

Together, we are all stockholders of this corporation called the United States. Why would the wealthiest and most powerful among us want anything but this corporation to succeed? Why would they not advocate to pay taxes to keep services and citizens and the commonwealth strong?

Sacrifice is not only for the poorest and weakest. It is a shared sacrifice that has made us strong and could continue to do so. Looking at Greece, the extreme view of a failed democratic social contract, shows the example to me of where we may be heading.

It is a simple lesson really. Let us not become gleeful, but share the sacrifices as we are able.

STOP THIS FREAKIN' WASTEFUL SPENDING.    now, of course DV will say it's a grant and that some other community would the money

A grant from the FHWA.  Bridges in thie country are in bad condition.  Anyone remember the lives lost in the Thruway bridge collapse?   How about the one in, what was it, Michigan?   How about Crown Point last year.

This country is heading to a debt of $14 TRILLION dollars, and DV would say spending money on a stupid museum is a good thing.   DV, is it better to spend money on a museum than to prevent the loss of life?   Tell us HOW spending money on a museum while cutting back on fixing bridges is a wise use of money?   And explain WHY it's good that the country goes into deep debt?

Unfortunately, DV will NOT address the questions.  He will either do the yawn, or allude to our negativity and the like.   But I will 100% guarantee that he will not explain museums are better than peoples' lives.   Why is it better that people die on bridges that fall down because money was spent for a grant for a museum.

You want a museum, pay for it out of your own pocket.

If the economy was good, that would be a different story.  But our economy has major troubles, the unemployment rate is higher than it's been in decades.  Clinton and Cuomo did so much back then, they wanted to have people own homes, no downpayment needed and look where it's got us.  I don't absolve Bush from bearing any responsibility.   But the dems decided to "fix" this economy by handouts so people could buy homes (rather than saving and sacrificing), so people could buy cars, so people could by news appliances, etc.   And how has that helped?   How effective was the dems spending spree?   Tell us how much unemployment has gone down.
