Fewer turn out for Muslim message
Low attendance blamed on poor weather for event
BY MARCY VELTE Gazette Reporter

The turnout for the third annual Islam Awareness Day was disappointing to Mohamed Zorqane, the imam at Masjid As-Sunnah in Schenectady.
More than 400 people attended last year’s event, held locally to dispel misconceptions about the Muslim religion. This year less than 100 people attended, and most of them were Muslims. Zorqane blamed the cold weather and the rain.
“Muslims like to attend, but we would like to see people of different faiths come, even people who may not have a religion,” said Zorqane.
The day was filled with food and speakers, and those who attended were given a copy of the Quran in English and a DVD called “The Fog is Lifting: Islam in Brief.” Participants were also encouraged to ask questions.
Organizer Ashraf Ali said the message most people receive about Islam is wrong.
He said the religion is about peace and working to better humanity. Media pundits who read only a few lines of script instead of studying the religion as a whole often misinterpret the teachings of the Quran, he said.
Zorqane agreed, saying it’s best to speak to someone who has dedi- cated his life to a certain a subject when seeking answers.
“When somebody has a question about medicine, they don’t go and talk to Sean Hannity. So why do it about religion? Their word on religion is not respected. [Pundits] allow themselves to talk about it, but they don’t know much about it.”
Smaller sects of the religion that follow only specific parts of the Quran have also made it diffi cult for Muslims, according to Zorqane and Ali. They feel their religion has been hijacked by people like Osama bin Laden, and they now have to defend it.
    “It gets frustrating,” Zorqane said.
Ali said he was indifferent about the death of bin Laden, because he didn’t consider him a true Muslim.
“Osama bin Laden does not represent our religion or Islam,” said Ali. “He was no help to our people or non-Muslims, so why should I have an interest? No religion teaches violence, no religion teaches you to hurt people.” ..............................>>>>...................................>>>>.....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00903&AppName=1

Again..............was this really 'news worthy'?

It appears that the gazette is consumed with who and how many are in attendance at ............
Proctors
Bombers
Golf outings
Green market
City mission
Bethesda house
Christmas parade
Clean up day....etc
and now Islam awareness day

What's next...........church functions?

How about the daily attendance at the dss building?
How about the weekly total unemployment checks?
How about the daily home vacancies?
How about the REAL daily calls into the police station? Oh that's right, they don't answer....ya just leave a message!
How about the daily city cell phone calls?
How about the daily gallons of gas used for city employee's cars?
How about the total in exempt taxes for businesses?
How about the total of lost tax monies to non-profits?............etc.....

True but all the "estimates" are way off. Attendance at the Christmas Parade has tanked since Mercury Morris screwed up the parade date. What they really should look at is how many out of State businesses have opened in this County since the founding of Metrograft and flushing $100 million down the toilet? It takes 10 years to calculate-ZERO.

I guess the whole thing BOMBED!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

"BOMBED"!  Interesting choice of words!

Perhaps the crowds were kept down by those concerned for their safety from Right Wingers Islam Haters who would love to BOMB their enemy at such an event.

Well, only bomb them to protect the civilians.  Like the neo lib Obama in Libya or Yemen, or Afghanistan.  And of course only with NATO and the U.N.'s support.  The Neo Lib way is to bomb with love.  And if you fire U.S. weapons killing innocent men women and children in a country that was never a threat like Libya, and you do it under a NATO or U.N. flag, those are peace casualties.  And those aren't cruise missiles - they're peace missiles.  The F in F-15 and F-16 doesn't stand for FIGHTER, but rather FREEDOM under acts of war under U.N. Charter.

WOW!  It's like the definition of an "INCOHERENT RANT"!

I think Cicero's finally lost it!

Those darn right wing Islam haters trying to set off a bomb in an suv in NYC, detonate their underwear, and in a shoe on a plane. We just have to stop those right wingers.

Because, after all, you hear so much about all those Christian and right-wing bombers, unlike the Muslims and leftist bombers you never hear about.

And of course, anybody that says anything about Islam is an Islamophobe.  I wonder, why is it that the people who accuse others of being Islamophobes are the only ones that would actually use a website by the name of IslamophobiaToday.com?  Maybe you could refer us also to the site where you review the Christianity phobia in America?

Yes, a nut job with a pipe bomb is the same as an SUV full of explosives but I missed the right wing Islam hater part in the article. Were these people Ron Paul supporters the article didn't say.
