Could the Schenectady Armory become home to an arts incubator center? That is one suggested use for the 75-year-old former state National Guard facility. Or it could remain empty because of its size, its need for significant renovation and its limited use, according to at least one developer. Jean Francois, executive director of the Hilton Center for the Arts in Rensselaer, has expressed interest in the building, attending an open house sponsored by the state Office for General Services. The OGS, which owns the Washington Avenue armory, will auction it off May 26 at the state Department of Transportation, 50 Wolf Road. The state is seeking a minimum bid of $395,000 for the 65,000-square-foot structure. What business person in their right mind would move or start a business in Schenectady with the high taxes/fees levied on them. Only the promise of a tax free deal will even get a business person to try to start a business and when the tax exemptions are gone so are the businesses.

Right. Did you hear about the "free" rent fiasco? Nonexistent City business renters will have to bring the building up to code costing thousands of dollars. Everyone running away from Ba-Ba's great deal. Then we have BNI who spends $175,000 to rehab a residence that's worth $55,000. Start knocking down these unsellable eyesores. Stop throwing good money after bad. Just what we need downtown another tax free mooch that generates police/fire calls.

"Interest shown?" Who? When you read the story one nonprofit has a place in Rensselaer covering the Northeast and the other looky loo is not interested at all. Another instance of the Gazetto trying to gloss over a total failure. The obvious bidder would be SCCC who could use the space for classrooms/dorms/ basketball/volleyball. But they prefer to build brand new creating greater costs for the oppressed County taxpayer.

You said a mouthful here!! The only business people that would even remotely consider opening up a business in schenectady are ones that get the lucrative taxbreaks/giveaways. Because they know it is a poor investment. And if the city doesn't continue their giveaways.....they will be gone!

the armory is an obsolete structure with inadequate parking -- that is hardly a reflection on the state of the City of Schenectady ... the best bet would be to either demolish it and sell the land for a shovel ready project or give it SCCC.

Then why don't they do that? Death Ray is still a member of the SCCC bored. This could be site of another Gillen's Gulch or another big job producer like the DSS hot dog stand. Instead of high tech jobs we got hot dog jobs.

The state is going back to square one after no one bought the Schenectady Armory at auction Thursday. The state Office of General Services, which owns the Washington Avenue armory, sought a minimum bid of $395,000 for the 65,000-square-foot structure. The price averages out to $5 per square foot. Thomas Pohl, assistant attorney with the OGS, who oversaw the scheduled auction at the state Department of Transportation office on Wolf Road, cancelled it because there were no registered bidders. Pohl said he will consult with the commissioner of the OGS about options for the property, hoping to receive some guidance over the next couple of months. “It will remain vacant for the foreseeable future,” he said. “We will try to protect the property as best we can” until it can be disposed of, he added. Options include reauctioning it or conveying it to Schenectady County. Well at least he wont have to spin a tale about bottom feeders with bad business plans when they go defunct after buying that lousy white elephant.

I think the local/State Hist. Foundation folks might have a few things to say in regard to any demolition plans. It may be on a State/National register of historic bldgs. And if it is protected that could present a real problem for any further use of it in conjunction with the prohibitive cost to renovate it. Could be sitting idle for many a moon.
