NISKAYUNA -- The ShopRite supermarket chain is eyeing a location in a long-struggling shopping and office complex along Balltown Road.
The chain, which is planning a multi-store expansion into the Capital Region, would occupy the old Grand Union space at St. James Square, providing the Niskayuna complex with the anchor tenant it has long needed.
ShopRite would lease the store from Columbia Development, which is purchasing the Grand Union space from Realty Equities Management, according to several people familiar with the transaction.
Columbia, one of the region's leading property developers, is helping bring ShopRite to the area and working to find locations for the supermarket. Columbia is also redeveloping a site along Central Avenue in Albany for ShopRite.
Seems a little close to their other store already in the area, Price Rite on Watt St., but I guess they see the need for another grocery store in this area. I guess Price Chopper has them just about that close too. Good luck to them, glad to see another business coming into the county.
Hey with the way Price Chopper prices things I can't wait for the Shop Rite. Maybe with some competition PC might start reducing their outrageous prices. This Advantage Card thing has to go too but knowing PC they would then charge everyone the higher prices.

Unfortunately it wont matter in the bigger picture of survival.......EVERYONE'S PRICES ARE GOING UP.....The norm will be higher than we have ever seen.....no cash needed just a 'proper credit score' and ATM/DEBIT/CREDIT card....closer than one thinks......the doller isn't falling---it's magically disappearing....get it?

NISKAYUNA Officials won’t confirm plans for ShopRite BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Michael Lamendola at 395-3114 or lamend@dailygazette.com.
Local officials could not confirm on Thursday that ShopRite supermarket plans to move into a newly subdivided section of St. James Square. A published report quoting unnamed sources said the supermarket chain will move into a portion of the long-vacant plaza. Phone calls to ShopRite were not returned. Niskayuna Supervisor Joe Landry said a ShopRite for the plaza would be great for the town, but he added he has not been told a deal is happening. “We are dealing with the developer [Paul Foley], who is dealing with the tenants. We do not know the tenants,” Landry said. “We hear there are multiple tenants, but we do not know who they are. I have not been informed or contacted as to who the ultimate tenant is.” Landry said the town is doing all it can to fill the plaza. “It is our top priority,” he said. Ray Gillen, commissioner of economic development and planning for Schenectady County, said ShopRite is interested in the area, but said he was not aware of any lease being signed. “They have looked at numerous parcels [throughout the Capital Region],” he said. The county is working with Foley’s company to market the site. An official with knowledge of local real estate transactions said a major upgrade of the facility is planned and that multiple tenants are interested in the site, but the owner first has to deal with technical and financial issues associated with the parcel. The upgrades would involve the expenditure of several million dollars to pave the parking lots and make repairs and improvements to the sprawling structure, which has been vacant for about a decade. The facility contains more than 100,000 square feet. ....................>>>>.......................>>>>........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00504&AppName=1

Hi Senders. Price Chopper prices have no relationship to the overall increase in prices. Everyone knows in general prices are going up on everything no need to shout Price Chopper has been higher than anyone else for years. They are a rip off.
They really gouge the lower economic classes because they know folks don't have cars and they take advantage of that.
And then price chopper spends all that money on those stupid gas commercials. "nine cents!" Yeah, what did he get for nine cents? One gallon? Of course, who would believe the commericals. And then, why would anyone pay typically 30% or more for groceries (Pr Ch prices over Hannaford and Walmart) in order to get a few cents off a tank ful of gas
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

I wasn't even referring to Price Chopper.....and if one thinks they are a rip off DRIVE to the next closest competitor....you see this brings up the question of what the definition of 'rich' is.....if you are able to afford a car to get to another store you are 'rich' compared to the person who has to spend 1/2 the day on public transportation to get to a different store....then there is the person who can pay someone else to do the shopping for them(elected officials) or drive them around.....who is rich? what is rich? Even if Price Chopper was higher than everyone else they are going up equally in proportion....so....it still wont matter....sheople still follow their same patterns.....what pisses me off is the nickel and diming with coupons/bogo etc.....my time cutting coupons and driving here and there to save a nickel or a dime is a waste.....it's like mice chasing cheese in a labyrinth.......rats in a cage

NISKAYUNA - ShopRite is opening a store in Niskayuna, a decision that will add a third major supermarket chain to the Capital Region.
Local elected officials and ShopRite executives are at St. James Square on Nott Terrace Extension where the formal announcement is expected momentarily.
Last month, the Times Union reported exclusively that the chain was eyeing the long vacant store, which is in one of the more affluent parts of the region.
The store is one of at least three that ShopRite is expected to open in the area. ShopRite is also looking at locations in Albany and Bethlehem.
It's official! With the Schenectady County only twist-sales tax give away for all construction materials. God forbid any increase in falling sales tax revenues because of this remodel. The County sheeple can pay their sales taxes.
After 10 years Metrograft finally got a tenant for the bomb St James Square! Present at the poorly attended dog and pony show the management/board of Niskayuna Co-op who since 1943 have seen many competitors come and go.
That area needed a grocery store. Price chopper on eastern pkwy will be the only one that may feel the pinch....if there even is one.
We haven't been to the eastern parkway store in a few years. We don't like the area.

No they didn't. Metrograft was useless as usual. In fact, when the project was originally announced some months ago, the town board said that they knew nothing about it.
I'm sure Metrograft will find some way of poking their pointy little heads into it though.
Metrograft doesn't deserve the credit for Shop Rite in Niskayuna, any more than they deserve the credit for the Shop Rite Locations coming to Albany, and Bethlehem.

You're right about them hogging credit along with DEM politicians. The suits outnumbered the sheeple. I heard ANG was there. The Nisky Supervisor even uttered the immortal words "working together works". Tape at 6pm and 11pm on Channel 13.
