Bar owner planning to build historic replica of firehouse Project to add space to Clinton’s Ditch

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

After years of delay, Clinton’s Ditch owner Tim Trier will fi nally rebuild the firehouse he demolished next to his bar.
This week , he will ask the Planning Commission for permission to begin the city’s first historic replica — a building designed to look like the historic structure it replaced. Trier plans to turn the fi rehouse into an addition that expands his bar by 50 percent.
The commission will review his plan Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. In 2007, Trier demolished the firehouse next to his bar on South College Street. He said the building behind the facade was about to fall down but that he could remove the front, demolish the rest and rebuild. Historic preservationists said they doubted the building was too far gone to save — but when workers tried to remove the facade, it crumbled into pieces. ......................>>>>............................>>>>...........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00102&AppName=1

I agree that rotterdam is a sh!thole. But it is a sh!thole based on reality! It reflects the 'real' economy. There is no false sense of economic security as there is in downtown schenectady. Municipalities built on the backs of the taxpayers is nothing more than corrupt corporate welfare.

Now....as far as rotterdam politics.........they are the laughing stock!!

Clinton’s Ditch expansion approved, despite critics

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Kathleen Moore at 395-3120 or moore@dailygazette.com.

Despite noise complaints and an appeal from the Schenectady Heritage Foundation for a more modern building, the Planning Commission approved the expansion of Clinton’s Ditch Wednesday.
The popular bar just off Erie Boulevard will soon expand into a replica of the historic 1800s firehouse that used to sit next door. Bar owner Tim Trier tore the firehouse down in 2007 and promised to replace it with a perfect copy.
But Heritage Foundation Chairwoman Gloria Kishton said the replica is worthless.
“We were disappointed to see a sort of timid, half-hearted imitation to the fi rehouse,” she said. “I’d rather see something even more modern.” Architect J.T, Pollard responded incredulously, “You sure you want that?” Kishton said the U.S. Department of the Interior advises against replicas. In published guidelines, the department says replicas should be made when “such reconstruction is essential to the public understanding of the property.” Kishton said a building design that “respects the nature” of its historic neighbors, but is clearly modern, would be preferable. “We would rather see an addition to Clinton’s Ditch that is clearly shown in its design to be from 2011,” she said. She did not receive any support from the Planning Commission. Chairwoman Sharran Coppola said, “I love the design. I truly do. I just like the whole presence of the building.” ..............................>>>>...................>>>>........................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01401&AppName=1
